WOODARD, with reference to his father Seymour WOODARD.  Seymour was born in Vermont and at the age of fouteen moved with his parents Lucius and Mary WOODARD in 1843 to the town of Luzerne, Warren County, New York, and later to Saratoga County where he resided ever since, except one year spent in the State of Iowa.  Since 1888, he has been a resident of the village of Hadley, and previous to that time resided on a farm in the town of Hadley.  As of 1893, Seymour was engaged in the grocery, undertaking and agricultural machinery business.  Politically he has been a Democrat all his life, and has served as assessor of Hadley.  He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

OBITUARY: Mrs. M.B. Woodard, Burt County Plaindealer, 1940.  Mr. & Mrs. Merrick Woodard and family left Hadley, New York, and came west to Nebraska in 1883.

Gordon Pearl CRANNELL (1919-    ) on 29 May 1997 commented to Kenneth M. REIM (1926-    ) about his Grandfather, Merrick Bennett WOODARD (1851-1934) as follows:  While living in Hadley, New York, he broke oxen, hauled freight, and mentioned you had to know how to lift an 800 pound barrel of salt.  Why did they move to Nebraska - Gordon didn't know, but thought land in Nebraska was opening up, and many were moving west.  In Tekamah, Merrick did carpenter an cabient work, worked in a lumber yard, and did some bookeeping.  Built a number of buildings around Tekamah; wrote his name some place on the buiding he built.  Merrick and Anna WOODARD very active/prominent in the Tekamah Methodist Church.  Merrick once shaved off his beard, and his wife Anna, said she wanted his beard back.

Arthur was reared on the Hadley farm untill he had attained his seventeenth year (1870), since which time he has always resided in the village of Hadley.  After leaving the farm he served an appreticeship as a cabient making, at which he worked for a period of five years, and then abandoned it for his health.  He soon after began work as a carpenter, and followed that occupation until the spring of 1883, at which time he embarked in the furniture and undertaking business, and conducted the enterprise for some four years.  He then disposed of the business, which one year later was repurchsed by his father, Seymour WOODARD, and since that time he has been acting as agent for his father in conducting the undertaking branch of the latter' business, and latterly as agent and manager in all departments.

On January 14, 1873, Arthur married Helen R. Allen, a daughter of George W. Allen, of Corinth.  They had three children with only two living as of 1883, George S. in his eighteenth year, and Grover A. born  August 11, 1885.

Arthur was an ardent Democrat, and served as school trustee at Hadley.  He has done much for the schools of this village.  He was amember of the Cornith Lodge, No. 174, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and of the North Hudson Lodge, No. 63, Order of Pente.
