Herman TREPTOW immigrated to America at the age of 17 with his 15 year old cousin, Albert Hanke on the SS Baltimore, arriving in Baltimore, Maryland, June 4, 1881. Herman's father, August TREPTOW, bought land 2 miles east of Ithaca in 1881 for $25 per acre. Herman bought the land from his father in 1893, married, raised a family and farmed this land the rest of his life.

She was survived by two sisters and one brother; Mrs. Fred Meierhenry and Miss Augusta Schmidt both of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ernest Schimdt of Fremont, Nebraska. Katie (SCHMIDT) TREPTOW and brother, Ernest SCHMIDT, wrote a history of their parents, "The Story of Ernst Friedrich Schmidt, 1827-1913, Soldier, Gold Prospector, Pioneer Farmer". Katie was also known to write poetry.

Ernest John TREPTOW married Elsie Rood, a school teacher from Wahoo, Nebraska on October 9, 1933. The government during World War II purchased the land they farmed in order to establish the Nebraska Defense Corporation, Mead Ordnance Plant, where they made aerial bombs. They then bought the Dech farm, located on an Indian burial mound just outside Ithaca, and the site of the first white settler in Ithaca. Ernest and Elsie had no children, but they raised two orphans, Wilma and Betty. Along with farming, Ernest was also the postmaster of Ithaca for 16 years, and collected stamps as a hobby. He loved communicating with people, and had many pen pals around the world. He would write people featured in articles in magazines such as the National Geographic, if he had something interesting to discuss with them. Ernest was driving his wife and mother to Wahoo one Sunday afternoon when they were involved in an automobile accident in which both women were seriously hurt. Elsie died July 8, 1962 at the age of 65. Katie, his mother died three days later. Herman died November 30, 1982 at the age of 86. These notes by Kathryn Rae (HANKE) STEVENS, June 4, 2000.

He worked well with his brother Arthur, and made investments with him. One such investment was the purchase of a threashing machine, which they would hire out to their neighbors at harvest time. Herman followed Art to Chicago to work, then served in the Navy Seabee during World War II. After the war, Art helped Herman find work as a building engineer in a large office building in Chicago. Herman married Violet Sullivan February 15, 1958; this marriage was not a happy one, and ended in divorce. Notes by Kathryn Rae (HANKE) STEVENS, June 4, 2000.

Arthur Reuben Treptow was restless living on the farm, and moved to Chicago to better himself. On march 21, 1936, he married Edna Scior; they had two children, Arlene and Richard. Art becamme a plumber/engineer for a large high rise office building downtown Chicago. Arlene married Gus Santoro, and their sons are John and Wayne. Ben TREPTOW farmed in the Ithaca Community, then moved the family to Greely, Colorado. Later they returned to Lincoln, where Ben worked for the University of Nebraska as a building engineer. They raised two sons, Kenneth and Keith. Kenneth married Retha Hanke, and their sons are Warren, Doug and Craig. Keith married Pat Gleason, and their children are Mike and Christine. MONUMENT, Indian Mound Cemetery, Ithaca, Saunders County, Nebraska; marked "SAMUEL G. TREPTOW, DEC. 11, 1902 - JULY 30, 1934". Samuel Treptow was a troubled boy who the family did not know how to help. Two years prior to his death, he sustained a fractured skull, from which he never fully recovered. The hardest thing his mother, Katie, had to do was to instituionalize him at the Lincoln State Hospital. Sam died July 30, 1934 at the age of 31. Epilepsy was listed as the cause of death. TREPTOW, 1ST LT US ARMY, WORLD WAR II, APR 30, 1904 MAR 12, 1988". SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX; SSN 320-28-7186, last residence 60610 Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Freda Treptow was the oldest daughter. She took an active role in managing the home and raising the youger children. She trained as a professional nurse at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. During the 1930s depression, Freda moved to Chicago and worked at the Cook County Hospital for room and board. Freda served 2-1/2 years in the U.S. Army in England as a trauma center surgical nurse during World War II. While there she sewed a friend's wedding dress from a silk parachute. Freda returned to Chicago, earned a Master's Degree, taught nursing students, and evenetually became director of nursing in a hospital. Her last position before retiring to Florida was Director of Nursing, Illinios Department of Registration and Education, which required frequent traveling. On April 23, 1945, he married Clara Hageman. She had been working as a home manager for a wealthy family in Lincoln, Nebraska. Werner farmed near Ithaca, and also owned the Ithaca Grain Elevator for a short time. They raise two daughters, Joan and Janet. Janet married Orville Friesen, and their daughter is Shellie Renee. TREPTOW, JAN 14, 1912 - JULY 2, 1931". Richard TREPTOW died in a farming accident while harvesting wheat with a team of horses at the age of nineteen, on July 2, 1931. OBITUARY AND FUNERAL SERVICES PROGRAM; Alma Luthern Church, Mead, Nebraska, 6 July 1999. Confirmed 11 May 1930, Evangelical Church, member of the Alma Church on 19 December 1948. Attended District #50 for 10 years, and graduated from Mead High School in 1934. After school, he farmed with his father. During World War II, he worked in a California aviation plant for 2 years. Upon the death of his father, he returned to Ithaca to resume farming the Treptow home place, and continued untill his death. Katie Treptow was able to live in her home until her death, with Gerald and Doris near by to see to any of her needs. Gerald and Doris built a new home on the site of the original home in which all of Herman and Katie Treptow's children were born, and farmed the Treptow land that had been in the family for over 100 years. He also sold insurance for many years. He enjoyed working with the youth as a Boy Scout leader. He was also on the Wahoo Precinct Road Board for 12 years. Despite physical challenges in his latter years, he enjoyed visiting with his many friends and participating in activities at the Wahoo Senior Center.
He married Katarina Augusta Schmidt 21 Mar 1895 at Fremont, Dodge Co., Nebraska . Katarina Augusta Schmidt was born at Fremont, Dodge Co., Nebraska 19 Dec 1873 daughter of Ernst Friedrich Schmidt and Augusta Johanna Friedricke Muller .
