DE AYALA OF CASTILE:
Dom W. Wilfrid Bayne, F.A.S (I am indebted to Major Rafael Gijon, a member of the Augustan Society for material obtained from Spanish sources.)

An account of this ancient Castilian family should be of interest to readers of The Augustin, as a supplement to my article, "The Baronial Blounts" (The Augustan, October-November, 1967; January-February, 1968.) This family has many descendants living today in America.
Dona Sancha de Ayala came to England in the train of Constance of Castile, daughter of King Pedro I, called "the Cruel." The Princess was betrothed to John of Gaunt, her father's ally, and came to England to become his wife. This was in 1372, and not long after Dona Sancha married Sir Walter Blount, an adherent of the house of Lancaster.
John of Gaunt died in 1399 and sir Walter was appointed one of his executors. He continued in allegiance to the house of Lancaster, and threw in his lot with Gaunt's heir, Henry of Bolingbroke, for whom, as King Henry IV, he fought at the battle of Shrewsbury, 21 July 1403. He was one of the knights who, "to protect the king, wore armor identical with that worn by Henry, and being mistaken for his master, was slain by Archibald, Earl of douglas (see Shakespeare's :Henry IV," First Part, Act V, Scene III.)
Dona Sancha survived her husband fifteen years, dying in England in 1418. In 1406 she founded the hospital of St. Leonards, situated between Alkmonton and Hungry-Bentley in Derbyshire. She bore her husband four sons and two daughters.
The eldest son, Sir John Blount, K.G., who fought in France with Henry V, and was Governor of Calais, died without issue. the second and thirds sons, Sir Thomas, ancestor of the Barons Mountjoy, and Sir James have descendants in America. the fourth son, Peter also died without issue. Constance, the elder of the two daughers married John Sutton, third Baron Dudley, and is the ancestress of the family of Dudley.
Dona Sancha's uncle Don Pedro Lopez de Ayalya (1332-1407) held office under four kings of Castile, Pedro I, Henry II, John I and Henry III. Under Henry III he was Chancellor of the Kingdom of Castile. He was twice taken prisoner by the English, during the struggle between John of Gaunt and Henry II of Trastamara, once by Edward, the Black Prince, and again in 1385 at the battle of Aljubarotta.
During this second captivity he spent fifteen months in an iron cage. Don Pedro de Ayala holds a distinguished place in the Spanish literature of the fourteenth century for his historical labors, his translations and his verse.
