The former moving into the edge of the County, building him a bark shanty in which he lived the following winter. Joel and Mary lived in Iowa and were buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua, Iowa.

1850 Census, Cape Vincent 807-404 284-285 Civil War discharge papers John and Maria were married at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Cape Vincent. He served in Co. B 7th Regiment Iowa Infantry. He contract rheumatism while in the sevice (presumably rheumatic heart disease) and died at age 40. They were buried together in Oak Hill Cemetery next to Joel and plooy, Warren and Marilla Parish.
