Phillip Carpenter enlisted 31 May 1782 at Salem, Washington, New York and was given a pension in 1832 while living in Brownsville. Phillip and Mary (Rhodes) Carpenter were married in her father's house. They brought their family to Brownville, Jefferson County, New York probably after 1812. Census records give the birthplace of the older children as Washington County, New York. Some records say Granville, although Phillip Carpenter does not appear in the 1790, 1800 or 1810 census of Washington County. Records for Levi and Cynthia say Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. The following was obtained from the military service of Philip Carpenter, on file in the National Archives: REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION FILE, Claim #14275, PHILIP CARPENTER He was born March 29, 1765 at Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York, the son of Jacob Carpenter. While residing in Salem, Washington County, New York, he enlisted May 31, 1782 and served as a private in Captain Job Wright's and Cannon's companies, Colonel Marinus Willet's New York regiment. He was in the battle of Fort Plain. He broke his leg while in service and was carried to the hospital in Albany. He was discharged from the hospital January 1, 1784. After the Revolution he lived in Hebron, Fort Ann, Granville, Plattsburg, Martinburg, and Brownville, New York. He was allowed persion on his application executed December 6, 1832 and was at that time living in Brownville, New York. He died November 13, 1836. Soldier married January 1, 1790 in Granville, New York, Mary Rhodes. She was married at her father's house; his name is not given. She was allowed pension on her application executed September 15, 1838, at which time she was living in Brownville, New York, and was aged sixty-five years. She was allowed bounty land in full satisfaction for the service of her husband, Philip Carpenter. Their children are referred to. The following are the only names stated: Asaph, born in December 1793, Jeremiah, born February 7, 1796 and Levi, whowas fifty-two years old in 1861. Soldier's widow, Mary, married about 1841 Jacob Brizee, Bersie, Bersil, or Berzil, who died December 26, 1860 in Jefferson County, New York. In 1869 she was still living in Brownville, New York and stated that she was one hundred and seven years old; and in 1871 her post office address was Watertown, New York. Mary Bresil (the name under which she was last pensioned,) former widow of Philip Carpenter, certificate 6463, issued May 27, 1869, rate $166.66 per annum, commenced September 20, 1865, Act February 2, 1848, New York agency.

Mary was remarried to Jacob Brazee about 1841. She was buried in Stone Cemetery at Pillar Point. Bounty Land File #14234 Mary Carpenter, formerly widow of Philip Carpenter sold to J and L Carpenter of Brownville. Other records state that Mary was born in Vermont and died in Brownville, Jefferson, New York.

In the 1850 census, Levi's mother and second husband, Jacob Breezee were living with them. Four of Levi's sons (Wellington, Winfield, Lafayette and Orville) served in the Civil War.
