       Gertrude's mother died young and she was adopted by her uncle, Edwin Leroy Grout and his wife, Charlotte Fay and was raised in Vermont.  When as a young lady she came to visit her sister Alzora who was raised by her Tracy grandparents, she met Austin who said she was so beautiful he could not help falling in love with her.
