       George cotton served as Sheriff of Denbighshire and was Esquire to the body to King Henry VIII and was knighted by him in or before 1542.
       He was given a new grant to Combermere, county Salop (Shropshire) by King Henry VIII, 3 Feb 1541/2, obtaining a site and demesne of the Abbey, and two-thirds of Newhall Manor, upon surrendering a two-year-old grant.  They also had grants of the manor of Wilkesley, cheshire, dated 3 April 1542, and of the manor of Pulton, Cheshire, dated 19 August 1543.

       In 1563 Richard built the Combermere manor house, which incorporated the remains of the Abbey.  According to the Court Rolls at Combermere, a joint manor court was held there by Richard Cotton, armiger, seneschel of the manor.  The manor of Newhall was vested in Sir Richard Cotton for two portions, and in the Fitzwaring for one portion.

He married Mary Onley Bef 11 Nov 1537 . Mary Onley was born at of Catesby Northampton, Eng. Abt 1506 daughter of John Onley and Jane Pontesbury .
