Archibald was born at the old homestead neat Waterville and attended the district school near his home. After his marriage he became active in local affairs and was a staunch Republican, but later cast his vote independently. He was very successful at agricultural pursuits and was most interested in the importation of pure bred Percheron and Belgian Stallions.

Mary came to Lucas County, Ohio in 1861 with her parents. She was the daughter of William Roberts, a native of Kentucky and Mary Hoag Roberts, a native of Ohio.
