John PRAY

John, son of Richard and Mary Pray, was doubtless born in Providence about 1655. His wife, Sarah Brown, was a daughter of John and Mary Holmes Brown. Sarah died the same year that her husband died, 1733. Austin says, "Aug 14, 1676, he was one of those who stayed and went not away in King Phillip's War. 1679, July 1st, he was taxed 1S. 10 1/2 d." He was a Freeman in 1687, Sept 1st. He was taxed 3 S 1694, Mar 6th. He made an exchange of 6 acres of land with John Whipple, the said land having been by father Richard Pray, now deceased. 1708, Set. 20, he sold William Crawford half a 40 foot lot for 2 -5 S. 1713, June 16, taxed 11 S. 1714, April 7, he sold Joseph Davis 86 acres for 40. 1717, July 23, he deeded son Richard for love all that my farm where I dwell, with dwelling house, that is half the said farm at signing and half at my decease and decease of his mother. 1721, May 20, he sold John Tuman 16 acres in the original right of Richard Pray. WILL OF JOHN PRAY: Dated 29 Apr 1726, proved 1 Feb 1734, Executor - son Richard: To wife Sarah half the homestead farm with dwelling house, all cattle and household goods for life while a widow, but if she marries, said half to son Richard. To son John 5, To son Hugh 5, To son Richard all the homestead, cattle, half at my decease and half at the decease or marriage of my wife. The homestead is described as situated in the north part of Providence. To daughter Mary Brown 5S, To daughter Catherine Comstock 5S, To daughter Sarab Brown 5S, To daughter Penelope Aldrich 5S, To daughter Martha Wilkinson 5S. Inventory 61 4S. Viz: Wearing apparel 6, books 6S, Copper 8D, feather bed 12, wool bed 5, flock 6, pewter warming pan 2, razors, yarn, 2 cows, calf, 15 sheep.

To Aquille Cleveland and wife Mercy, grandchild, 68 pounds - 2s, 5 Nov 1767. Scituate Bk. 1, p. 155 (abstract as follows:) John Pray of Scituate died 1 or 2 of June 1747. His brother Jonathan Pray was appointed administrator. He presented the inventory of the estate, part of which was in Maryland. Scituate Bk. 1, p. 197 (abstract as follows:) The personal estate of John Pray was divided to his brothers and sisters, viz: To Abigail Pray, 18 pounds - 13s - d, 24 Nov 1748. To Elijah Blake and wife Sarah, the same, 24 Nov 1748. To Hugh Pray Jr. the same. To John Greatreaks and wife Patience, the same. To Abner Hopkins and wife Mary, the same, 20 June 1750. Situate Bk. 1, p. 444 Hugh Pray died 13 Apr 1761. His son Jonathan named administrator. 1708 was a "Freeman" 1713, Jan 16 taxes 2S 6D 1726, Sept 20, sold John Pray Jr. 30 acres for 14, 10S 1744, July 18 In Scituate he deeded son for love 62 acres and 55 acres next year to son Jonathan 1750, Dec 31, his son Jonathan rendered account of administration of estate of deceased brother John Pray and took receipt for 18, 13S, 2D, each from the following brother and sisters: Elijah Blake and wife Susan, Hugh Pray Jr., John Greabeak and wife Patience, Abner Hopkins and wife Mary, and sister Abigail Pray. 1761, April 25, Administration of eldest son Jonathan. Incentory 156, 1S Viz: Pocket book and money 23, 2S, Pewter, a cow, heifer, a calf, a pair of oxen, 2 sheep, lamb, hog, riding beast.
