       John Brown was born in 1630 and died about 1706.  He married Mary, daughter of Rev. Obiadiah and Catherine Holmes of Newport, R.I. and resided in Providence at the North End in the house near the one afterward occupied by his son Elder James, near the junction of North Mail and Randall Streets.
       Like his father he was a surveyor as well as a Baptist Elder.  He served in various important capacities, was moderator, member of the town council, deputy in the legislature, etc.  His children were Sarah, John, James, Obidiah, Martha, Mary and Deborah.
