His grandson, Ebenezer Gay was Pastor of the Old Ship Church at Hingham, Mass. for nearly 70 years, and other Gay devines descended from him. Jerusha Bradford. qv. JOHN GAY OF DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS: by Capt. Jesse Bishop Gay John Gay was one of a body of spirited and determined men and women who in Feb. 1630, attended a meeting of the Puritans in the New Hospital, Plymouth, Eng., with the purpose of emigrating to the new world. This company was principally from the counties of Devon, Dorset and Somerset. They selected Gov. John Warren and the Rev. John Maverick as their pastors. On the 30 Mar. 1630 they embarked in the 400 ton ship "Mary and John" Captain Squeeb. The number of the company was 140. After 70 days sail they entered the harbor of Nantucket (Pomery Records.) John Gay settled first at Watertown. He was one of the founders of the plantation at Dedham, his name appearing on the petition for the incorporation Sept. 6, 1636 and among the the original proprietors of lands. He was one of the selectmen 1654. He died Mar. 4, 1688; Joanna, his wife, died 14 Aug. 1691. She is said in family traditions to have been widow Baldwicke before her marriage to John Gay. His will in the Suffolk Records dated Dec. 18, 1686 was proved 17 Dec. 1689, his wife Joanna and son John being the executors. His estate was valued in the inventory at 91 pounds 5s 9d. Admitted a Freeman in 1635.
