From Biography of Thaddeus Wilton Huff by daughter Malta Lorene Huff Smith:
Elizabeth was of the same family as President John Quincy Adams. Her father
Jonathan Adams was a man of considerable wealth, having large plantations with
hundreds of Negro slaves as was customary in the South at that time. Known to
be a very kind master, his slaves chose to remain with the family when they
were given their freedom. Even though Betsy was reared in an environment of
wealthy and luxury, she never felt that slavery was right. One time Betsy
and a cousin were riding around the plantation. When they cane upon a field of
slaves working, Betsy is alleged to have said, "This is not right that we
should be riding around living in luxury while those poor slaves are laboring
to create more wealth for us. I hope to see the time when it is not so." At
the time of her marriage to Thomas Huff 22 June 1788 she refused to accept from
her father a gift of two slaves to be her personal servants. This girl who had
never done anything of a laborious nature went to her new home ready to do all
of her own work. She enjoyed a reputation as a fine homemaker. She also
tutored her children, having enjoyed a good education herself. She instilled
in her children a love for knowledge. Came to Utah July 2 1952.
