Notes:
A letter from Frances Audiss (granddaughter of Henry W. Bigler, son of Jacob Bigler Jr. and Elizabeth Harvey, first wife) of Sioux Falls to Vera Bigler Bybee, her cousin, reports that Mark, father of Jacob Sr., had a farm in Holland on the Rhine River, one part in Holland and one part in Germany. He had to pay taxes in both countries. The family presumably came from Switzerland originally; the name Bigler is Swiss, not Dutch. Jacob Sr. was in the Revolutionary War and fought with his father Mark in the Continental Army. Matilda Bigler Martin, daughter of Jacob's brother Mark, wrote in her diary: Jacob Bigler was a quiet man, short and heavy-set, handsome and full-shouldered. The family was from Holland. He died in Sept 1829 at approx 76 years of age of cancer of the mouth. He was buried in his apple orchard. A state road now passes over his grave. He carried a musket while plowing on his farm, for he never knew when he might need it to save his scalp.
