From Biography of Thaddeus Wilton Huff by daughter Malta Lorene Huff Smith:
Moved at young age with family to Walker Co., Georgia, (Early Records of Walker
County, Georgia, Vol. 1 and 2.) Moved to Hancock County, Georgia, where he is
listed as a taxpayer in the year 1812. Married there. Moved to Chambers
County, Alabama, then to Pontotoc, Mississippi. Here they met Elder Thomas, a
missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who converted
them to that faith. They were baptized in 1850 in Pontotoc. Soon thereafter
they made plans to emigrate to Utah. They were traveling north on the
Mississippi River on the steamboat Saluda which had been chartered to take a
company of Saints up river to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Near Lexington (Ky?) a
boiler explosion caused the boat to sink on April 9, 1852. Among lives lost
were John Tillery Mitchell, husband of Rebecca Huff and Alivia Huff Felts and
husband Asa Felts and one of their sons. The family lost nearly everything,
but a small chest containing some family heirlooms. Thaddeus Huff was
responsible for saving the lives of several family members.
They refused an offer of Dr. John C. Gunn to finance their return and aid them
financially if they would give up their "foolish idea" of going to Utah, but
they refused. In 1853 they started for Utah with the Moses Dailey Company.
Thomas drove one of the Church teams. They settled in Bountiful, Utah, where
they remained until 1855, when they moved on to California to pioneer the
wilderness near Anderson, Shasta County. Thomas died there in 1855. Arrived in
Utah in 1852.

From Biography of Thaddeus Wilton Huff by daughter Malta Lorene Huff Smith:
Elizabeth was of the same family as President John Quincy Adams. Her father
Jonathan Adams was a man of considerable wealth, having large plantations with
hundreds of Negro slaves as was customary in the South at that time. Known to
be a very kind master, his slaves chose to remain with the family when they
were given their freedom. Even though Betsy was reared in an environment of
wealthy and luxury, she never felt that slavery was right. One time Betsy
and a cousin were riding around the plantation. When they cane upon a field of
slaves working, Betsy is alleged to have said, "This is not right that we
should be riding around living in luxury while those poor slaves are laboring
to create more wealth for us. I hope to see the time when it is not so." At
the time of her marriage to Thomas Huff 22 June 1788 she refused to accept from
her father a gift of two slaves to be her personal servants. This girl who had
never done anything of a laborious nature went to her new home ready to do all
of her own work. She enjoyed a reputation as a fine homemaker. She also
tutored her children, having enjoyed a good education herself. She instilled
in her children a love for knowledge. Came to Utah July 2 1952.

AFN:342Q-H6 shows death date to be 11 Dec 1843, which is unlikely as that would
have made her 7 years old at time of death and would not explain reported
marriage to David Shanahan. Also, name is in Ancestral File as Elizabeth
"Betsy" Victoria Huff. In Biography of Thaddeus Wilton Huff by Malta Lorene
Smith Huff, it says that Thaddeus's sister Elizabeth (who must be this same
Betsy) was stricken with inflammatory rheumatism. She was seriously ill,
swollen and suffering excruciating pain. When the Elders came and administered
to her she received an instantaneous healing. A record of this healing is
found in church history.

From Biography of Thaddeus Wilton Huff by Malta Lorene Huff Smith:
Jefferson found it necessary to attend school only one year as he was taught
so well by his mother. At that time he was able to pass examinations to become
a teacher, which profession he followed most of his early life. For a time he
acted as secretary to Brigham Young. Later he turned to farming. He was a
"fiddler" and a dance master.
