History of the United Methodist Churches of Missouri
Notes:
Note: Richard Sharp was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Church in 1812 in Richmond, Virginia. In 1818 he was elevated to the office of Elder in Louisville, Kentucky. After serving as a preacher in Virginia for more than 20 years, he came to Missouri in 1831. He was one of the earliest settlers in Madison, Shelby County. He then moved to Palmyra. Later he purchased a homestead 4 1/2 miles NW of Monroe City. He built a log church in 1833 called Sharpsburg Church. The community that grew up around it is called Sharpsburg. Rev. Sharp lived on the old homeplace there until his death in 1850. (History of the United Methodist Churches of Missouri)
