NOTE: EMIGRATED: c1638 TO Massachusetts Bay Colony Robert was a yeoman, or ploughman, and made freeman in May 1666 and again in Oct 1667 [Hoyt, 1897]. He was a constable 1671, and lived in Haverhill. Robert deeded land to Abraham Clement, brother of his daughter Elizabeth's husband John Clement. In Dec 1692 his brothers John and Nathanial of Haverhill also quit claimed land in Salisbury to Abraham. Robert deposed in 1711 that he was aged about 86 years, and so was born 1624-25. From: Early New England People Robert, the third son, born probably in England, was made a freeman in 1666. He received land in the second and fifth divisions of "plough-land." He was a Selectman in 1685, also under the new charter in 1692, where he is called Sergeant. He was one of a committee of three who were appointed to see about settling Rev. Benjamin Rolfe, the second minister in Haverhill. He married, in 1650, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Palmer, of Haverhill. Their children were: Elizabeth, Samuel, Mehitable, Timothy, Hannah and Mary. He received land in the second and fifth division of ploughland. In May 1666 he took the oath of freeman and in October 1667 was made a corporal of the Haverhill military company, later sergeant. He had some degree of education as he signed a quit claim deed in his own hand in 1669, as well as other documents. In 1671 he was deputy constable of Haverhill; on the grand jury in 1678 and 1679; and selectman in 1685 and 1692. He was one of a committee of three appointed to see about settling the Rev. Benjamin Rolfe, second minister of Haverhill. March 2, 1692, he bought from his son-in-law John Clements a houselot with house, barn and cider mill, and all his ox common land as well as his land in Haverhill for ?200. It was probably a trust deed for Clements' wife and children as Clements died soon after. Elizabeth died April 24, 1705, aet 71, in Haverhill. Robert died before March 1717, aet 92. He had deeded property to his children in 1708 and apparently gave the remainder of his estate to his grandson James Ayer, retaining its use for life.
