                   Mary Thomas named her son born 1866 Arthur Ernest Pierce born. Ira Pierce, Mary's first husband, died during a Civil War battle in 1863. She married Cornelius Cadwell in 1864. This was n ot a successful happy marriage. Cornelius Cadwell was married at the time of his marriage to Mary Thomas. As the marriage was not legal, Mary tried to have restored the Civil War pension that she had received prior to her marriage to Cornelius Cadwell. In the pension file there are affidavits that Cadwell had spent all Mary's money and had deserted her. Possibly Mary was very bitter after this experience and did not want her son to carry the Cadwell name. The death certificate of Arthur Ernest Pierce lists his father as Ira Pierce and mother as Mary Thomas.

                   The death certificate of Arthur Ernest Pierce lists his parents as Ira Pierce and Mary Thomas.  Ira Pierce was the first husband of Mary Thomas.  He died 28 May 1863 during a Civil War battle at Vicksburg, Ms.  Mary Thomas Pierce married second Cornelius Cadwell 21 May   1864 in Mc Henry Co., Il.  However in 1866 Cornelius Cadwell had left Mary.  Mary then found that Cornelius had been married previously  and had not been divorced.  Mary's marriage to Cadwell was not legal.  He deserted her and spent all her money.  Ira Pierce could not have been Arthur's father.  He was conceived during her illegal marriage to Cornelius Cadwell.  Mary had received a Civil War pension as  the widow of Ira Pierce.  The information about her marriage, desertion, and treatment by  Cornelius Cadwell is in that pension file.
Arthur will be sealed to both the blood line, and his mother's first husband, due to the strange circumstances.
