He worked on the farm, operated several grocery stores, peddled milk for the Blanding Milk Co. in Greenville, had a dairy for a short time in Belding MI., also in Lowell MI and had an Ice Cream Bar in Ionia MI.  He retired in Florida until his death from Alzheimer's disease.

He founded X-Rite Corporation and was a principal shareholder at his death.  He is the compliler and author of "Genealogy of the Blanding Family"
