The Hugunots were part of the Reformation in France. They became a political party as well as a religious party, demanding that the Bibl ebe translated into languages the people would understand. Thousand sof Hugunots were massacared on St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572. Th ename Hugunot is thought to have come from the Swiss religious leade r,Bezanson Hugues.

Edict of Nantes is one of the most famous Royal Decrees in history .It was the first official recognition of religious toleration b y agreat European country. King Henry IV of France signed the Edic t inthe city of Nantes on April 13, 1598. The edict marked the en d ofstruggle between the Roman Catholics and Protestants that had lo ngcaused trouble in France. By the decree, the French Protestants , orHugunots, were allowed complete freedom of worship in about seventy-five towns. They were also given equal rights with the Catholic sas citizens. They could trade freely, inherit property, attend schools and universities, and hold official positions. As a guarantee of these rights, the Hugunots were premited to fortify certain cities .LaRochelle was the chief city fortified. A judicial body called t heChamber of the Edict was set up in what was then the supreme cour t ofFrance, the Parliament of Paris, to protect the rights given b y thedecree. The intolerant King Louis XIV did away with the edic t in1685. Thousands of Hugunots promptly left France to seek home selsewhere. Countries welcomed them as most were skilled craftsme nand were a distinct addition to the industries of their new countries.

The Hugunot Society of Virginia shows Jean Pierre Bondurant coming t oAmerica as a single man with other French Hugunots. King William o fEngland granted this particular group of Hugunots ten thousand acre sof land between North Carolina and Virginia because the land was marshey and he wanted a buffer between Richmond and the Indians. William Byrd, of Virginia, persuaded them to settle at Manakin, an abandoned Indian town about twenty miles above Richmond and the James River.
