OBITUARY OF LAWSON SMITH MOORE

Captain L. S. Moore, another of Bozemans prominent citizens, passed away quietly, Monday evening December 7, 1903 at his home after suffering for the past 18 months from cancer.

L.S. Moore was born, March 1, 1938 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, and with his parents, in an early day, moved to Banbridge, Clinton County Missouri, where on Feb 22, 1850 he was married to Miss Carolyn M. Johnson. To them were born 7 children, Lucy Jane, (Tiller), 1877. William E. 1856-1902, Ida Belle (Gearhart), 1868-1925, James 1871-1926 (Lawrences father), George R. 1873-1875, Thomas E 1876-1876, Mary Price (Bickford) 1877- , (Do you have a date for aunt Prices death?) Somehow I have failed to get it down in this book)

When the civil war broke out he enlisted as one of Missouris first volunteers under General Price. The first 6 months he served as a private, three years as a Captain and the last 6 months a prisoner of war in St. Louis. At the close of the war he entered in business as a merchant in Banbridge, afterward moving to Plattsberg, where he re-entered his former business, and also, a flouring mill in connection. From there he moved to Atchinson, County, Missouri, where he was engaged in farming until 1878, when upon the death of his wife, he moved to Jewel County, Kansas, remaining there for 1 year on his farm. Afterwards he went to Century County, where he lived for 7 years, as a successful stock raiser and farmer. In March 1881 he was married to Zenetta McClintock and to them were born two children and Ollie May was born in 1882 and John S was born in 1883 and died in 1974. In 1887 they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, remaining there for 8 months, then immigrating with ox teams to the Pan Handle of Texas, where they lived on a stock ranch for 5 years. In 1893 he disposed of his ranch in Texas, on account of his wifes health, and after leading a camping life for 2 years, finally settled down in Barry County, South Western, Missouri, where after the death of his wife, February 13, 1895, he remained for 6 months, returning to Texas and Oklahoma, where he lived about 18 months, and 1897 came to Montana where he has spent the remainder of his life in stock raising and farming. The last 2 years of his life he spent searching for medical aid. He was a member of the Masonic Order, but was never identified in Bozeman. He had been a devoted member of the Christian Church since early boyhood, living an upright honorable life, faithful to his fellow men and true to his country . He bore his suffering as only one of his strength and courage and love of God could.

Besides many friends, he leaves to mourn his loss Mrs. Ida B. Gearhart, of Oaklahoma, Mrs. Mary P. Bickford of Kansas, James E., John I., and Ollie M. Moore of Gallitin Valley.

His remains were interred in the Masonic cemetery in Boaman.
