Adams, one of the pioneer settlers and a man noted for his integrity and honor, passed quietly away on the old homestead in Black Hawk County, which has been his home for over 42 years. Mr. Adams, during his long residence in this vicinity, has been surrounded by a host of friends who join with the bereaved relatives in mourning his loss. Benjamin Adams was born in Onondago County, N.Y. on the 10th day of December, 1814, and when 9 years old moved to Cattaragus County. In the year of 1837 he moved to Cook County, Ill. and in the year 1840 he married Miss Arminda West. In the year 1854 they moved to Iowa and have since resided here. He died Oct. 13, 1896 at his home in Black Hawk County, aged 81 years 10 months and 3 days. To him was born 9 children, 5 of whom remain with his wife to mourn his loss. Mr. Adams was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, being baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ, composed of Latterday Saints a short time age. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church at this place and were conducted by Rev. Wyrick. The remains were laid to rest in the Fairbank Cemetery. Independence News: 1 Aug 1896 - Many from this neighborhood went up to the Adams place to see the damage done by the cyclone. It was a terrible sight, the houses and nearly everything in them being blown to pieces. Family records of Harold Chase 1216 1st St. NE Oelwein,IA 50662 Obit taken from Martha Bradley's records: Arminda West, daughter of Mr. and Mrs James West, was born in Cattaragus County, N.Y.-Dec 31, 1824. The light in the earthly tabernaclee was removed Friday night, Sept. 27, 1912 near the midnight hour, after shining forth for 87 years, nine months and 26 days. While in her teens, she with her parents, came to Cook County, Illinsoi. This union was blessed with 9 children, 2 0f whom died in infancy. After living in Elgin for 14 years they moved to Iowa in 1854 and settled where theu resided the remainder of their days, the father departing this life about 16 years ago. James A. died in Cario,Illinois. while on his way home from the civil war in 1864. Lovina died in Siloam Springs, Arkansas about 1897. There remains to mourn her loss the following children: H.L. Adams, Mrs Sam Monroe, Charles Adams and Mrs Lucinda DeWald all of Fairbank. Besides these she leave 58 grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Four children she raised as a mother. She was a member of the Baptist Church for eight years, uniting with the body many years ago. About 19 years ago she united with the Latterday Saints. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Sept. 26 in charge of the Reverend Peddicord and internment was in the Fairbank cemetery. Conflict: Harold Chase Grandson said Arminda A. Military: Civil war, Co C, 9th regiment Iowa Inf. enlisted 9 Mar 1864 mustered out 18 Jun 1865 at Louisville,Ky. Affidavit dated 12 May 1886 from Adjutant General's Office stated no records of wounds or injury. His physical description at the time was: eyes, blue; Hair, light; complexion, fair; height, 5'4"; Pension: Horace stated Melissa applied for divorce around 1875 at Brownsville,Mo. and remarried. He did not list May Lyons as one of his and Lucinda Herr's children, so assume Lucinda had her before they were married. When Lucinda applied for pension after Horaces's death, she stated Horace left her 15 Jan. 1911. Residence: Hot Springs, S.D. in Oct 1912.

Life's Labor Ended Mrs Larina Miller, wife of Hiram Miller, departed this life June 17, at her home near Silvian Springs, Arkansas, where they had moved only a few months ago. Her sickness was of short duration. Her babe of a few months followed its mother in a few days. Mrs Miller was a illustrious example of Christian character and her life although one of, an ofter of suffering , was laid with Christ. (Her faith... etc. etc.) --- May her death be the means of bringing the sorrowing family closer to Him who doeth all things well.

She was born at Elgin,Ill., and came to Fairbank with her parents when she was three years old. She was married to Samuel Monroe at Fairbank Sept 16, 1871 and they celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary in 1935. The left Fairbank and moved to Canada in 1913. Surviving her are three sons, John, Campsie; Delbert, Sangudo,Alberta,Canada; George, Waterloo;five daughters.
