Need to check the Devonshire records to see if I can locate this Austin family there in the parish records. This could help prove or disprove the Hern Grace Austin connection. There is a Thomas Austin in the 1840 federal census in Cuyahoga Co.,Ohio Said 2 males between 5-10 yrs of age 1 male between 40-50 years of age. Living in Orange Twp. Also uses the last name of Austin and Wilson. Need research on other marriages Ed Rogers said Eliza Viola Austin (his grandmother) had a half brother Charles and a half sister Grace Hern or Ern. There is a William Hern in Chagrin Falls, page 40 where Eliza Viola said she was born. He has a wife Grace who could be the daughter of the first marriage of Thomas Austin. This would make Charles a cousin and Grace the half sister. There is also a William Martin in the 1870 federal census Chagrin Falls page 14 with a wife Jane 44 and three children. (Check 1880 fed census for both a William Martin with a wife Jane or a wife Mary Ann) Unable to locate Mary Ann in 1870 in Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga,Ohio with either a Hern or a Wilson. (Mary Ann marries William Martin in 1873) 1860 federal census p.4 family # 152 there is a William and Grace Hern with a daughter Mary Ann Hern age 15, a son charles Henry Hern age 11. There is also a Charles Wilson age 30 living there with them. Census also said they were both born in Devon,Engl. There is a marriage for a Mary Ann Hern and a Charles Wilson in 1861 in Cuyahoga Co.,Ohio. I think this is a marriage for these two and not our Mary Ann. Thomas was still alive in 1863 when they sold their property in Cuyahoga Co.,Ohio. From my study of the federal census' I think the Grace Hern Ed Rogers said was a half sister was the daughter of Thomas Austin and his first wife. It appears that Charles Hern was the son of Grace. Note Chas. is a witness on the marriage license of Mariette Austin and Robert Quick. Ed Rogers said Charles Hern died in Cheybogan, Mi in 1925 but there is no record of his death there. If we can find a death record on Charles we might be able to prove or disprove the relationship of Grace to Thomas Austin. Need to check the property records of Iowa Co.,Wisc. or write to Iowa Co.
