"North of Ryfylke is Sunnhordland, second to Østfold the area with the largest number of noble estates. Elsaker, Eriksfjord, Fet, Flateråker, Gjersvik, Halsnøy, Hatteberg, Hovland, Kjerland, Lyse, Malkenes, Mel, Onareim, Sandvik, Seim, Skade, Ske, Tysse, Valvatne, Vatne, Ænes and Ådland are only a selection. And moreover, many of the families of these estates left descendants in the area. Mowat, Rustung or rather Tronds, Dall and Bagge will be in many if not most family trees of this area. Some of the people involved even played significant roles in the Norwegian history like the pirate Kristoffer Trondsen, the Archbishop's man who later became admiral for the Danish King on the condition that he had to live in Copenhagen and not move back to his home in Norway. Hardanger also hosts several interesting farms like Aga, the ancestral home of the Galtung family. That family still exists in Norway and so do lots of cognatic descendants. Links from the Galtungs back to the people at Torsnes, Sandven and Norheim prove that a numerous nobility at different levels of society has been active in these regions."
