Kalf was King Olaf II's lenderman in the interior of the Throndheim country. He became a great chief, and was a man of very great understanding.

Kalf deserted Olaf and joined Jarl Hakon's forces in January, 1029.

Kalf later led the army that went out against King Olaf when he returned to Norway, in 1030.

Kalf did not get any of the rewards that Canute had promised him for his treachery.

In 1034, Kalf and Einar Tambaskelfer went to Novgorod where they agreed to become Magnus' men and help him win the throne of Norway.

For a while, Kalf helped Magnus and was one of his chief advisors. However, there came a time when Magnus grew angry at Kalf for his role at the Battle of Stiklestad. Kalf then fled the country.

Many years later, Kalf's brother Fin was able to get King Harald Hardrade to let him come back to Norway. Kalf then came back into the country and Harald made him his lenderman with all of his forrmer holdings and power.

>Death note: Kalf was killed in a battle against the Danes at Fyen. Harald and the rest of his force defeated the Danes and penetrated far into the country.

However, Finn and many others said that Harald wanted Kalf to be killed because he put him in the front of the battle and did not come to his aid sooner.

Notes:
In 1026, and Icelander named Stein came to Thorberg's house and sought sanctuary. Stein had killed one of King Olaf II's men and fled from Olaf's court, where he was a hostage. Ragnhild received Stein as a guest because he had once helped persuade a priest to come and baptize Thora, when she was born. (Thora was born in poor condition and not expected to live.) When Olaf heard of this he demanded that Thorberg come to him. Thorberg went to Olaf with a ship and men. He was accompanied by his brothers and their ships and by his brothers-in-law, Sigurd and Thord and their ships. With this force, Thorberg's brothers were able to secure Thorberg's safety and get the king to let Thorberg keep his lands. Olaf also agreed not to kill Stein, so long as he never came to his house again.

Thorberg remained loyal to Olaf. He and his brothers, Fin, and Arne were among the people who accompanied Olaf when he fled Norway, after Canute had taken the country.

Thorberg and Fin fought for Olaf at the Battle of Stiklestad. However, both of them survived the battle.

Notes:
Fin was King Harald Hardrade's lenderman at Austrat in Yrjar.

Fin and all of his brothers, except Kalf, were great friends of Harald.

Harald came to Fin and asked him to effect a reoncilation with the bondes and Hakon Ivarson over Einar Tamberskelfer's and Eindride Einarson's murders. Fin agreed on the condition that, if he succeeded, Harald would allow Kalf to return the country and regain all of his former holdings and power.

Fin was able to bring about the reconcilation by agreeing that King Magnus' daughter, Ragnhild would marry Hakon. However, Ragnhild would not marry a man who had no title and Harald would not make Hakon a jarl because he already had one. Both Hakon and Fin felt that Harald had broken his word.

After a while, Hakon and Svein had a falling out. Hakon then returned to Norway. Orm was dead at this time and Harald made Hakon his jarl. Then Hakon was able to marry Ragnhild.

Then Harald let Kalf Arneson come back into the country and made him his lenderman with all of his forrmer holdings and power.

The following summer, Kalf was killed, by the Danish, in battle. Fin thought that Harald had deliberately put Kalf in the front of the battle, without adequate, timely, help, so that he would be killed. Fin became so angry that he left Norway and went to Denmark where he entered into King Svein's service. Svein made Fin the Jarl of Halland.

Fin fought with Svein at the Battle of Nis River. He was captured, but Harald spared his life and let him go.
