                   In the Netherlands, he left home at age 13 to become a Cabin Boy.  He never did go back home again.

When he met Eva ten Hoeve, he fell in love with her.  She wasn't as taken with him.  When he learned that she and her family were moving to America, without telling her, he made arrangements to sail to America before her.  He signed on as a Long Shoreman on the docks.  To her surprize, he was there waiting for her when her boat arrived in Hoboken.

She was so taken by the idea that he did this for her, she decided to accept his marriage proposal.

Eventually, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where one of his employment opportunities was to work as a handyman for a government agency helping to build houses for workers.

                   She had always been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  After her husband died, she became devoted to doing genealogy work for the family.  She would walk to the genealogy department nearly every day until her death.

She related, one time, about a name she submitted to the temple to have ordinance work done for him.  The member who stood in proxy for this member of the family looked her up.  He informed her that after he came out of the water he saw a man standing at the edge of the baptismal font.  The man said, "Thank you" and simply disappeared.
