William farmed near Hanford, CA.  He was a railroad man and was a locomotive engineer.  He became interested in the Utopian colony called "Topolobamp Project" on the west coast of Mexico and joined them in the ill-fated project.  After its abandonment, he returned to California and was an engineer on the Southern Pacific line through the San Joaquin Valley until his retirement.  Father:  Samuel F. Deardorff - born 14 July 1825 in Union County, Indiana.  Mother:  Susan McVey - born Merced, Merced County, California.  Married Eugenia Ballou in 1871

Mrs. Elsie A. Speake, a Fresno resident for many years, died today in the home of a daughters, Mrs. Alta Betty Smith in Piedmont, Alameda County.  Mrs. Speake was born in Hanoford, Kings County and lived in the Fresno and Mendola areas for about 50 years.  Her husband was the late Samuel M. Speake, a general yardmaster for the Santa Fe Railroad.  Her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Deardorff, were early day San Joaquin Valley residents.  Also surviving is a son, Sam W. Speake of Fresno.  Funeral services will be held in Oakland.
