My wife Dorothy Parker, and I lived in a part of Henrico County north of the James called Lilly. When John Clarke made his will in Henrico County in 1678, he provided that "the first child the said Dorothy Ballow bears, be it either son or daughter, the said child to heir and enjoy all my lands." If we were related
to Mr. Clarke, he did not say how. The tithable list of Henrico County made in 1679 to comply with "An act for the defense of the country against the incursions of the Indian Enemy" included my name, and I was county constable until John Cox Jr. took my place in April 1684. . . . I prefaced my will of 11 October 1700 with, "I william Ballow of Lily Valley in the County of Henrico, planter, sick in body yet of good and perfect memory thanks be given to almighty God for the same." While most planters left specific instructions for what each child was to receive, I gave 12 pence to each of 10 children, whom I did not name and left everything else to Dorothy, making her executor. i was dead by the next February. At her death Dorothy owned 17 cattle, 6 sheep, 27 pigs, a young mare, one car, and one old horse. Inside she had five feather beds, rugs, blankets, three chests, coopers and carpenters tools, old books, and two looking glasses. For cooking and serving meals she owned pewter, old silver, two old kettles, a skillet, 4 iron pots, and table linen, all worth 12,750 pounds of tobacco.

A Huguenot refugee.

«/b»Excerpts of letter sent to Walter Wade Smith - transcribed by Pamela Vick -
In March of 1941, a Mrs. George C. Lewis (Marcia Moss Lewis), of 8 summit Grove Avenue, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, also a Ballou researcher, sent me data on early Ballous in Virginia. She found, that the first Ballou come to Virginia, was "Lt. Col. William Ballou, who came to Virginia with the Kings Troops to protect the Colonists from the Indians and remained. He married Dorothy Clarke, daughter of John Clarke. His will is on record in Henrico Co., VA Will Book II, p. 32 for 5 April 1678; sons mentioned, Leonard, William and thomas." Of this William Ballou, Jr, son of Col. William Ballou, she says, that his will, recorded in Henrico County, Virginia, Will Book, Vol. V, p. 197 dated February 3, 1700, left ten children without naming them, evidently minors, etc., that his widow Dorothy Ballou, died soon after he husband, naming one son, Charles Ballou. That Charles Ballou died, will date January 17, 1726 and names wife, Tabitha; children, Charles Jr., Sarah, Michael, Phoebe and Mary. That Charles Ballou, Mr. died Cumberland County Virginia, 1767, will in Book II, P. 333; wife Temperance, and children william, Annie, Charles (3rd), Jesse, Thomas John and Mary Ballou.«b»
