"Sewall's History of Woburn, Mass "Richard Snow was the earliest inhabitant of Woburn bearing his name. He was taxed there in the Rate for the County, assessed 8 Sept 1645, which was the first tax in Woburn upon Record. In 1647-8 land was granted him by the town. He bought, 19 Nov 1656, a house and 20 acres of land of George Farley, one of the original inhabitants of Woburn, then recently removed to Billerica; and in the general distribution of common lands and timber, made in 1668, he had a due proportion assigned him in the "fifth eighth." He seems to have been an industrious, thriving husbandman, and to have maintained a respectable rank in Society; but not being ambitious of honor and distinction, he never attained to any considerable office either in the church or town. He died 9 Nov 1711"

Richard Snow - born 1607 in Barnstaple, Devon, England - died 5 May 1677 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts
Mother - Anis or Avis (surname unknown)
This was the Snow ancestor who came to the New World from England. He is listed on pg. 141 in the "Book of Original Lists of Persons of Quality from Great Britain to the American Plantations." As a passenger on the ship "Expedition" on 20 Nov 1635, he was examined by the Minister at Gravesend, England; to be transported to Barbados (Jamaica). It was noted that "The men have taken oath of allegiance touching their conformite to the orders and discipline of the Church of England." Richard Snowe was 28 years old. He did not stay long in Barbados, for he is listed among the first taxpayers of Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts in 1645. This is only two years after the County was formed. In 1659 Richard Snow of Woburn was dismissed from ordinary training in consideration of his "inefficience to bear arms". He would be 52 years of age at this time. Sometime after his 28th year, when he came alone to the sugar plantations of Barbados, he courted and married Ann, Annis or Avis - whose last name and birth place are not surely given. A claim of de Barry was made by some researcher, but to me it is in question as this surname comes earlier in the ancestors (8th gg). The children of Richard and his wife were all born at Woburn: John about 1640, James about 1642, Daniel 4 Feb 1645, Samuel 28 May 1647 and Zechariah 29 May 1649. His will is recorded in Pope's Pioneers of Massachusetts", dated 30 November 1676 and probated 19 June 1677. (copy found in Snow file). . . . .
Richard and his wife Avis left four sons at their death. They had five sons, but Daniel died at the age of one.
