«/b»Ballow is Afflicted With a Mysterious Malady - H.D. Ballow, formerly of this city, but recently in the employment of the Nevada Lime & Rock Company at Sloan, came to the Las Vegas Hospital shortly after the first of the month, afflicted with a mysterious "sleeping sickness." At the time he arrived here he had been asleep most of the time for about a week and since entering the hospital has been asleep practically all the time except when aroused by his physician or nurse.

However, the last few days he has been shaking off the coma and Dr. Martin believes he will be all right again soon. The malady is peculiar in that the only alarming symptom is the inability of the patient to keep awake for more than a few moments at a time, being apparently normal in all other respects.

«/b»Large Sodium Sulphate Deposit Near Las Vegas
It is perhaps not known to the people of Las Vegas, that within two miles of Las Vegas there occurs one of the largest deposits of high grade Sodium Sulphate Salts in the State. This deposit covers some two thousand acres in area. The deposit is located in township 20 S. Range 62 E. M.D.B.& M and is well situated for extensive and economical development. it is in view of the knowledge of the occurence of this large deposit of commercial Sodium Sulphate, that I have made the statement that in the near future there would be established in this valley a large alkali works for the manufacture of caustic soda, a commodity which is extensively used in the soap industry and numerous other industrial and commercial purposes. The process of manufacture is a very simple one, requiring only caustic lime as an agent to convert the sodium salt solution whereupon there is. This agent is used in the form of milk lime which is added to the sodium salt solutin whereupon there is an exchange of atoms through chemical actions. The caustic lime being converted to lime sulphate and the sodium sulphate to caustic soda.

The establishment ofthis industry in this valley would bbe of great benefit to the lime industry already well established in this district, and I earnestly hope that any efforts in calling this wonderful deposit to the attention of our progressive citizens will not be in vain towards the promotion of industrial activity along this line of industry.
