John Ballow. Rancher, railroader and sportsman, John Ballow is an energetic member of Lincoln County's Game Management Board. Exploits such as once roping a 175 pound mountain lion, and in another season shooting a rare "cactus buck," (a mule deer with curious, many-nubbled antlers), bore on his election to that board. With Rachel Schlarman, to whom he was married in Las Vegas, May 1, 1943, he shares their family and work, active membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, plus additional hobbies, including membership in the Pioche Gun and Rod Club, the Old Timer's Club and the Nevada Horseman's Association. Mrs. Ballow is also a past member of the Elgin District School Board.

Born in Levan, Utah, May 19, 1919, John Ballow is a son of Frank Ballow, a blacksmith from Chico, California, who died in 1956. His grandfather, Charles Ballow, native of Eldorado, California, was a mine superintendent in Mexico, when in 1909, Frank met and married Bita Escamilla. Born in Mexico, she died in 1943. In 1930, during the Great Depression, John Ballow, who attended school in Utah, and in Lincoln County, began work with the Union Pacific railroad, serving as a brakeman during World War II, and continuing in track-service afterward. It was in 1930 too, that John bought the ranch at Elgin, near Caliente, which supports 150 head of commercial grade Hereford Cattle and 10 head of horses, with its irrigated hay lands.

Rachel Ballow, born in Los Angeles, is a daughter of Henry Joseph Schlarman, who migrated from Germany to the USA as a boy in 1905, and to Nevada in 1914. Her mother, Rachel Ralston, a California native, who died in 1951, was married in El Monte, California, April 1, 1908, to Henry Joseph, who was accidently killed while working for the Union Pacific, December 20, 1927. John and Rachel Ballow's family includes two sons and a daughter, Joseph C., married to Bertha White and father of Joanne, Rhonda, Donna, Richard, Barbara, Debra; Thomas, who married Doris Bielke, and fathered Tammy and Michelle; and Brenda, wife of Archie Rogers, and mother of Karla and Von.
