DEXTER, Worcester, MA. 1905.
«/b»pg 14: footnote: "ANDREW HALLETT, JR., the son of ANDREW HALLETT of
Weymouth, England, came over in 1635 at the age of 28.
ANDREW JR., settled in Lynn, moving to Yarmouth in 1637. Admitted as
freeman before 1640. In 1642 he bought of Giles Hopkins the first house
known to have been built by white men in town, also ten acres of land. He
afterward purchased other lots until he owned 300 acres. He had rights
in the common land for 500 acres more. He also had land in Barnstable.
He was a shrewd calculator and good business man, and before his death
his taxes amounted to 1/20th of the whole tax of the town. He died in
1684 aged 76 [= born 1608] and by his will, after providing for his wife,
ANNIE, (who was a daughter of ANTHONY BESSE of Sandwich), (Annie was
probably the 2nd wife. see notes for his children.) remembered his
daughters and grandchildren, liberally, and giving to his oldest son,
JONATHAN (who married ABIGAIL DEXTER) the little calves pasture so
called, as a token of his right as oldest son. His sons JOHN and
JONATHAN to divide the rest of the property peacefully between them.
His estate was valued at ll80 lbs. Much of his landed estate remained in
the family for years."

«b»Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families «/b»- Pg. 506 - Children of Andrew Hallett and Anne Besse -Jonathan is first heard of in 1683-4 when he "married Abigail Dexter, daughter of Ensign Thomas Dexter of Sandwich and granddaughter of Mr. Thomas Dexter of Lynn. In 1684 he was constable of Sandwich, and an inhabitant of that town. He was 36 when married and his wife 21 years of age. After the death of his father,m he removed to Yarmouth and resided in the west room of his father's house till 1695, the year after the death of his motherm, when he built his new house. . . . Jonathan Hallett after the decease of his father was the most wealthy man in Yarmouth, and is brother John ranked next to him. . . His will is dated 5 Dec 1716 and was proved 14 Feb 1716-1717. He names his five sons, Ebenezer, Thomas, Timothy, David and Jonathan, and his daughter Mehitabel Sturgis, Elizabeth Crowell, and Abigail Hallett. . . The men of the third generation were church members; but not of the noble, self-sacrificing race by whome the country was settled. Jonathan Hallett loved money better than he loved the church; he was industrious and gathered up richesd which his childred put to a better use than he did. He died 12 Jan 1716-1717, aged 69 years, and his wife died 2 Sept 1715, aged 52 years. Both are buried in the old burying ground in Yarmouth, where monuments are erected to their memories.
