«b»Notes from history written by Kenneth Keith Blackett about his father Charles Kenneth Blackett
«/b»Cause of his death was an auto accident in his town of Nephi, Juab, Utah. In front of the old north ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints. On highway 91 in January of 1940 either on the 17th or 18th. He was traveling to his mother in laws to see his son Kenneth Keith who was sick and had stayed there when he left was sent home from school. As Charles Kenneth Blackett was traveling toward there a car driven by a person that was very drunk was coming at head on at a very high speed. Upon impact Ken's car motor landed in the seat beside him, and the steering wheel was pushed into is chest. After Ken was extracted from the wreckage, they took him home along with the doctor to try and treat him. Being unable to help him, they said that he sould have to be taken to the hospital. The hospital at that time was in Provo Utah which was 48 miles from his home. They had no ambulance in the town so they called the undertaker to bring the funeral car to take him in so they would be able to keep him layed out flat. By the time they got him there, he had lost so much blood that they could not save his life. I thought that it may e something of interest for someone in the future to know how he came to his death. This is what I Kenneth Keith Blackett can remember of the accident and what I was told by my mother at the time.

A broken rib had gone through his heart. The mother was pushed into the cab or front, of father's car and pinned him between stearing wheel and back of seat and the pressure of the motor going through the wall into the front seat crushed his chest so bad that one broken rib pierced his heart. They brought father home and laid him on the dining table as it was long and flat. They they took him to the Provo Hospital. He died as he got to Payson.

«/b»Nephi - Kenneth Blackett, 35, of Nephi, became Juab county's first traffic victim of 1940 Friday when he died at 11:45 AM in a Provo Hospital of internal injuries suffered when his automobile collided headon with another machine Thursday at Nephi. Mr. Blackett, according to Marshal J.R. Barnes, was driving south of US Highway 91, two blocks north of the Nephi business district, when his car collided with a northbound automobile driven by W.F. Barron of Sigurd.

Foggy Windshields - although he had not completed his investigation Friday night, Marshal Barnes said he believed foggy windshields on both cars were contributing factors in the accident. He said he would report to the county attorney probably Saturday and give complete details of his investigation. The marshal said Barron was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash and would be held in custody pending completion of the investigation.
Marshal Barnes said he did not believe either car was going more than 30 or 35 miles an hour and that "excessive speed was not the cause of the mishap.

Given First Aid - The collision occurred between Third and Fourth North on Main Street at 8 PM. Mr.Blackett was given first aid at Nephi, then taken to a Provo hospital. Mr. Barron suffered minor chest and arm injuries.

Mr. Blackett was born in Nephi, 19 February 1904, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Blackett, and was educated in Nephi schools. He had lived there most of his life, engaging in farming and poultry raising. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ellen Ostler Blackett; his father; four children, Ruth, Keith, David and Lynn Blackett; three sisters, Mrs. Luella Ostler, Mrs. Alberta Jones and Mrs. Pearl Snow, all of Nephi.

On January 19, 1940 when Charles was killed in an automobile accident, his wife Ellen was in the vehicle and planned on making the trip with him. They left Ellen Ruth & Ken home to take care of the younger children. when Ruth & Ken started fighting, Elolen got out of the car and took them all in the house. She did not go with Charles that day.
