He was baptized October 15, 1848 a member of the LDS Church by John Griffen at Woolwich in Kent, England. He married Hannah Smithson July 24, 1854 at Hartlepool, Durham, England. They had one child born at that place, Robert Collingwood, Jr. They left England and came out to this country for the gospel settling at first in Omaha, Nebraska. Here another child was born, Edward Blackett 1857. In 1861 they moved to Springville, Utah and moved to Fort Alma, now called Monroe in Sevier, Utah. Here they had to live outside the fort in a dugout and while Grandpa Blackett was away working, grandmother stayed alone with her little children. Many tmes she was very frightened with the Indians, but was brave and stayed there to help do her part in making a home for her family. They moved to Nephi on account of the trouble with the Indians and remained there. They had nine children, seven boys and two girls. Grandfather Blackett was ordained a deacon in 1849, a priest in 1853, an elder at the time of them going to the Old Endowment House December 1, 1868, a High Priest October 21, 1903 by J.W. Paxman. He died July 8, 1905 Nephi, Utah. Grandma Blackett was born June 21, 1835 at Old Hetton, Durham, England, was baptized by Robert Collingwood Blackett, Sr. at Hartlepool, Durham, England, September 17, 1850. Died Friday, September 1, 1916 at Nephi. She leaves 7 children and scores of other relatives as well as hundreds of friends in the eastern end of the county where she has resided for many years. «b» Obituary - Juab County Times - Nephi, Utah, Friday, Sept. 1, 1916«/b» Death of Mrs. Hannah Smithson Blackett Last evening Mrs. Hnnah Smith Blackett died at her residence at Nephi. Mrs. Blackett has been ailing for some time past. She was born 21 June 1835 at Old Hetton County of Durham, England, was baptised September 17, 1835. She was married to Geo. Blackett July 24, 1854. They came to America in 1857 and to Utah in 1861 where they located at Springville. Later they moved to Sevier County where they were driven out by the Indians and came to Nephi where they have lived ever since. Her husband, Geo. Blackett died eleven years ago. Mrs. Blackett is survived by the following children besides many grandchildren and great grandchildren: R.C. Blackett of Salt Lake, Andrew J. and John Blackett, Mrs. James W. Schofield, Lillian and Lawrence Blackett all of Nephi, and Eugene Blackett of Eureka Utah. The funeral will be held Sunday. «b»Funeral Announcement - Juab County Times - Nephi, Utah, Friday, September 8, 1916 Good Women Laid to Rest - Funeral for Mrs. Hannah Blackett Held in South Ward Meeting House «/b»Funeral services for Mrs. Hannah Smithson Blackett were held in the South Ward Meeting house Sunday afternoon. The services were presided over by Bishop A.H. Belliston. The singing was furnished by the ward choir, assisted by Miss Della McCune, who sang the solo, "Face to Face". Bishop T.H.G. Parkes was the first speakers, in his characteristic way, he plainly demonstrated the duties of mankind on earth, the reward of a well spent life, and eulogized the life and good work of the deceased. I.H. Grace was the second speaker and he gave a brief sketch of the life and good works of Mrs. Blackett, thehardships she endured in the early settlement of Utah. He spoke in high terms of the family and decendents of the deceased. Bishop Belliston made a few closing remarks. The high esteem in which she was held was demonstrated by the beautiful floral display and the many friends present at the funeral. She was past eighty one years of age at the time of her death. The last number of year she has made her home at Nephi. She is survived by five sons, R.C. of Salt Lake, Andrew J., John W. Lawrence of Nephi, Eugene of Eureka, two daughters Mrs. Jame W. Schofield and Miss Lillian of Nephi. The following were the out of town people who attended the funeral, R.C. Blackett of Salt Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Blackett, Mrs. Nesibett and daughter of Eureka, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Blackett of Mills, and William Blackett of Springville. Blackett - Nephi - Andrew Jackson Blackett, 78, died in his home here Saturday after a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted by Bishop Elgin R. Garrett in the Nephi North Ward Chapel, tomorrow at 2 PM. Interment in the Nephi Cemetery will be directed by Anderson Funeral Home. Mr. Blackett, son of George and Hannah Smithson Blackett, was born in Springville on December 19, 1864. He came to Nephi with his parents and had resided here since. He married Sarah Jane Worthington on Dec. 27, 1888 and spent his early married life as a surveyor for the government, after which he followed farming and stock raising. Surviving are a son and three daughters, Mrs. Luella B. Osler, Andrew Raymond Blackett, Mrs. Alberta Jones and Mrs. Pearl B. Snow of Nephi; a brother and two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Schofield and Miss Lillian Blackett, Nephi and Lawrence Blackett of Salt Lake; 26 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. «b» History written by Pearl Snow«/b» Andrew Jackson Blackett was born in Springville, Utah September 19, 1864. He was baptized a member of the church at 8 years. He moved from Springville with his parents to Monroe and from there to Nephi where he has lived since. He started school at age 10 under the direction of Jerusha Boswell for one year, then to Mrs. Schofield, Gus Henroid, Charlie Morris, and Lizzie Schofield, finishing the fifth grade. It was hard in those days for parents to give their children an education. He was compelled to stop school and help his father on the farm and work at what he could find. He worked on the Oregon Short Line doing grading work. He worked at odd jobs until about 1886 when he worked for the United States Coast and Judilic Service as a surveyor for 13 summers. During this time, he was camped on top of Mt. Nebo 12000 feet above sea level. He carried supplies from the bottom to the top, staying from May till August. He then did survey work on the Beaver Mountain, Ogden Mountains and also helped survey what is known as Church Island, the Elks Mountain in Colorado 14400 feet and in Nevada. He was married to Sarah Jane Worthington December 27, 1888 at Nephi, Utah. They had seven children, 4 girls, 3 boys. He has been engaged in farming ever since his marriage. He has been an honest man all his life and would never cheat , not even as a child. He was always willing to help in time of need. Blackett Funeral Held Wednesday - Nephi Farmer Died Last Saturday After Lingering Illness - Impressive funeral services were conducted Wednesday in the North Ward Chapel under the direction of Bishop Elgin R. Garrett, for Andrew J. Blackett, who died at his home Saturday morning. Musical numbers were given by L.P. Anderson and Mrs. Marjorie Boswell, President Herman W. McCune; piano selection, Miss Rheta Sperry. A quartet, composed of Ralph Barnes, Mrs. Afton Lamberts, Mrs. Emma Cannon and Bisho Tranter also sang a selection. Prayers were offered by C.H. Garrett, and George W. McCune. The speakers were President James H. Ockey, Robert P. Garrett and Joseph H. Greenhalgh. The grave in the Vine Bluff Cemetery was dedicated by Albert E. Sells. He married Sarah Jane Worthington on Dec. 27, 1888 and spent his early married life as a surveyor for the Government after which he followed he occupation of farming and stock raising. Surviving are a son and three daughters: Andrew Raymond Blackett, Mrs. Luella B. Ostler, Mrs. Alberta B. Jones and Pearl B. Snow, all of Nephi; one brother: Lawrence Blackett of Salt Lake City, and two sisters: Mrs. J.W. Schofield and Miss Lillian Blackett of Nephi. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and one great grand child.
