John was born and reared in Glasgow, Scotland. As a young man he was sent to Canada for his health and to purchase hides from trappers to send back to Scotland to his father's shoe manufacturing business. He met his first wife while he was buying hides from her father. They lived in Sarnia, Kent, Ontario, Canada, and while there the missionaries taught them the gospel. They joined the Church and moved their family of five children to Nauvoo. When they were forced to leav, they started west as a family until John was asked to take the first mail to Utah in 1848. He had to leave his family to travel without him. Annie stopped in Council Bluffs where their son Joseph was born. They left Council Bluffs in July 1849, arriving that fall. The family settled in Big Cottonwood. Later they moved to Mill Creek and then to Tooele where John and his sons built a sawmill in Settlement Canyon in 1859. From 1854 to 1859, he served as a counselor to Bishop Miller. He remained active in the church.

Annie Anderson Smith - Annie emigrated to Canada with her parents, John and Catherine Brown Anderson. Her father was a trapper and Annie met John A. Smith when he came to their home to buy hides for the family shoe business in Scotland. They fell in love and were married. Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints taught them the gospel; they joined the church and with their family of five children left Canada with a company of converts traveling to Nauvoo. They saw the Prophet Joseph Smith playing ball with a group of boys. He stopped playing and came over to greet them, welcoming them to Nauvoo and the main body of the church.

John A. Smith was called to take the first mail to Utah in October of 1848. Annie and her children left Council Bluffs on July 4, 1849, where her son Joseph was born in February 1849. With two wagons pulled by ox-teams across the Plains, they traveled in the Captain Silas Richards Wagon Company arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on October 24, 1849. The company was divided into groups of ten. Annie said he was very good to her and her children. In Salt Lake City they settled first in Cottonwood, then later moved to Mill Creek Ward. Later they moved to Tooele where the remainder of their lives was lived.
