                   Hannah's birthdate: family records 21 June 1835, IGI 21 June 1836. She was 6
in 1841 census, was 16 in 1851 census.  Hetton-le-Hole baptism brn 22 June
1832, chr 5 Oct 1834, so either the 1832 Hannah died young, or the birthdate
was miscalculated.
The marriage data on the children with "?" are supposition based on census
records and the IGI. ?Edward Smithson to Sarah Ann Frost - Thomas Smithson to
Elizabeth Colling?
The spelling of the wife's maiden surname has been determined from her
father's signature at his own marriage.
Middleton today is a district of Hartlepool, on the east side of the harbor.
Susanna in the family records is Hannah's sister-in-law.  Couldn't find which
brother she married.

       It appears that Edward and Margaret Smithson first lived at
Hetton-le-Hole a township in the parish of Houghton-le-Spring, Durham, about
1831-1840.  They then moved to Hartlepool, a seacoast town about 15 miles to
the southeast, where children were born to them about 1840-6.  They still
resided at Hartlepool for the 1851 and 1861 censuses.
       The 1851 census was searched for the family of Edward and Margaret.  They
were found on Throston Street in Hartlepool.  This record gave us many new
facts; Edward's birthplace was Chester-le-Street, not Sunderland, as on the
family group sheet.
       The family was still in Hartlepool, although at a different address, for
the 1861 census, where by now Edward and Margaret had several grandchildren
living with them.  From this census we learn that Margaret, not Annie was
married to a Jackson, and that Annie's husband was Clougham.  It also appears
that one daughter not at home was married to a Hodgson, since there is a
granddaughter Ann Hodgson, age 8, with the family.  There may therefore be a
missing female child in the family we will yet need to identify.  The missing
sons were likely at sea, the British censuses recorded only who stayed the
preceding night at each address.
       Based on the census information for Edward, we searched the parish
registers of Chester-le-Street, Durham.  His ages in the 1851 and 1861
censuses were in conflict, giving him a possible birth interval of 1798-1803.
In this period in the parish registers we found a likely christening for him.
This christening appears to be the only possibility, yet there is a
discrepancy with the family records.  The father in the parish register is
Williamm not Thomas, At present we are inclined to accept the father given in
the parish register.  It is possible that Edward's father was dead by 1835 and
thus never known by Hannah, who could have misremembered his name by 1901.
