John was a sailor in his youth, and lived successively at Scarborough and Newry Maine, and in Hancock County, Illinois. John CARTER and Hannah Knight LIBBY, both natives of Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine, had a family of eleven children. Two died in infancy; all the others grew to maturity and reared families. John and Hannah lived at Scarborough until about 1810 when they moved to nearby Newry in Oxford County, Maine, where two of their children died and were buried 1815 and 1827. During the 1830 decade they joined the westward migration as did their progeny. Hancock County, Illinois records have a land deed dated 1842 from Jacob DOOLEY to John and Hannah K. L. CARTER. In 1846 some four years later John CARTER Sr. sold this tract to William CARTER. John CARTER Sr. did not leave Illinois as many of his family did when the Latter-day Saints vacated Nauvoo before the mobs assault. John CARTER never joined the LDS Church. Alhough he took Hannah to Illinois, he refused to go to Utah. Hannah left him and traveled west to the Great Salt Lake valley with the Mormons. Hannah was named after her great grandmother whose name was Hannah Knight. Hannah married John Carter in Scarborough. They became the parents of eleven children. Hannah was very ill at the time she heard the gospel, from the missionaries, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They told her if she had faith, she could be healed. They blessed her. She was made whole, arose, and asked to be baptized and confirmed that same day.

Her husband and three of her children did not join the Church. Her family moved with the Church from place to place; Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa. Hannah worked hard to raise a large family in a time of many hardships and religious persecution. Six of her children shawred her beliefs and followed her example.

In 1842, Hannah and John signed a deed in Hancoc County, purchasing land at Morley's Settlement. They helped to develop this new community only to be driven from it in 1846.

Her son, Dominicus, was an expert blacksmith who was asked to remain at council Bluffs, to help prepare the emigrant trains for the long journey West. Another son enlisted int he Mormon Batalion and died in service on the march to California. Hannah left her husband and crossed the Plains with Domicus and his family in 1851. Shortly after their arrive in the Salt Lake Valley 20 June 1851, they went on to make their home in Provo. She continued to live with Dominicus.

«b»Find a Grave«/b» - Dominicus Carter - born 21 June 1806 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine - died 2 Feb 1884 in Provo, Utah, Utah -

Born in humble circumstances in Scarborough, Cumberland county, Maine, Dominicus Carter was the son of John and Hannah Knight Libby Carter. His father was a farmer, and Dominicus along with the rest of the family worked the farm. He had no formal schooling, but he did learn the trade of blacksmithing.

He married Lydia Smith in 1828 and a few years later they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (Some records have 30 June 1832, others have 30 June 1834.) They moved to Kirtland (it appears they were in Kirtland by 1834) where he "had the privilege of hearing and listening to the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith."

In 1838 Dominicus and Lydia Smith Carter were a part of Kirtland Camp, the large wagon train that made the exodus from Kirtland to Missouri. While traveling, they lost their two-year-old daughter Sarah Emily. Then, twenty days after arriving in Far West, Lydia died, leaving Dominicus with four children. The following month, November of 1838, he married Sophronia Babcock. Together they endured the trials of expulsion from Missouri.

In 1839 Dominicus took his first plural wife, Sylvia Ameret Meacham, and in 1844 he took another Mary Durfee. He also was married to Sophronia Babcock's younger sister Eliza Babcock. It appears that Dominicus and Eliza were married in 1846 during the Nauvoo period, but she was back with her mother soon after as evidenced by the Winter Quarters Wards Membership Lists. Eliza crossed the plains as Eliza Babcock, and in 1855 she married John Groves.

Dominicus was living near Nauvoo when the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were killed.

The trials of those days are well known and don't need to be repeated. It is said that Dominicus intended to leave with the early emigrants for the West, but he was asked to stay in Nauvoo and build wagons. He also worked on the Nauvoo temple and was one of those who received the blessings of that temple in December of 1845. Eventually they joined the body of the saints in Winter Quarters, but Sophronia died in childbirth on the plains on 26 August 1847.

In 1851 Dominicus, his wives and his six living children finally arrived in Salt Lake City. They moved to Provo in October of that year. But Sylvia Meacham decided that she didn't like the life of the polygamist wife and divorced him. It's unclear exactly when she left, but they had to be together for the conception of their son Isaac Morley, who was born in June of 1851 and died while they were crossing the plains. They had no more children together (see her bio) and Sylvia married her 2nd husband on 3 Nov 1855, so she was divorced from Dominicus by then.

Once Dominicus was settled in Provo, he took four more wives:
Polly Miner 1851
Elizabeth Brown 1852
Caroline Maria Hubbard 1854 (divorced in 1861)
Frances Nash 1857

Among his descendants, much is made of Dominicus Carter's nine wives, but before he ever came west he had already lost two of those wives, and three others chose to leave. During most of the Provo years he lived with four wives: Mary Durfee, Polly Miner, Elizabeth Brown and Fannie Nash. At his death all four of those women were at his bedside. By the count of his grand daughter Hannah Clark Pike, he had "46 children, 17 of whom preceded him in death, 87 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren." (The book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah" says he had 52 children, but there are several known mistakes in that list.)

Dominicus Carter was described as a high-spirited man and a respected citizen of Provo:
He was First Counselor to President George A. Smith of the Utah Stake.
He served on the Provo City Council.
He was a Probate Judge for four years.
He was a good singer and in the early days led the singing in Provo.
He helped organize a band which furnished music for the early militia and was their leader for twenty years.

During the 1880s, when polygamists were hunted and tried, many men went into hiding but Dominicus Carter stood his ground. As a result, he served time in the state penitentiary. He was in his seventies.

In the history that Hannah Clark Pike wrote about her grandfather, she said this: "For years he ran a blacksmith shop in Provo. I remember as a girl seeing him put the oxen in an old wood frame to shoe them. He and his older sons also ran a hostelry. I remember seeing the stages drive in, they would run out and change the horses. Sometimes the stage would hurry away and at other times they would remain and go to my father's large home and eat. He always lived in Provo, owning a great deal of property. His homes, blacksmith shop and hostelry were between 1st and 2nd North, 5th West and from 4th West to 5th West and 1st North, Provo. He died as he always lived, a true Latter-day Saint. While on his death bed he called his family around him and gave them many sacred charges for their guidance through life. He bore a strong testimony to the divine mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith and advised his posterity to abide in his faith."

Laid to Rest - Funeral Services of Sister Eliza Ann Snow
The funeral services over the remains of Sister Eliza Ann Snow were held in the Fourth Ward meeting house today. Elder Jacob F. Gates presided. The choir sang: "Oh My Father" Prayer was given by Elder John G. Jones. The choir then sang "When First the Glorious Light of Truth" by request of the deceased. President Partridge was the first speaker. He referred to the sterling qualities of the departed, and said we were all responsible for our own actions; Sister Snow had more friends on the other side, than she had here. He closed by invoking God's blessings to rest upon the Mourners. President D. John said he had been acquainted with the deceased for about 36 years. She had passed through the trying scenes of pioneer life in Utah, and had been faithful to the end. He exhorted the numerous posterity of the deceased to be faithful to the duties in the Church of Christ, and the speaker closed by imploring the divine assistance to rest upon the family of Sister Snow.

Elder James E. Daniels said he fully realized the situation of the departed. Deceased was a member of the Provo Choir in 1854 and was a member of the Kirtland Temple Choir in 1836. She was at the dedication of the Manti Temple, though very sick when she left Provo. Said there was no need for us to mourn in view of the glorious reward before her. Elder S.S. Jones said he felt honored in being permitted to speak. The deceased had a large family to care for, and she was now free from the cares and sorrows and trials of mortality. Elder J.E. Booth read a biographical sketch of the life of Sister Snow written in her own handwriting. Brother Booth said it was only once in a while that you could see anybody who had been acquainted with the Prophet Joseph, and Sister Snow was one of that number. Bishop J.B. Keeler was the last speaker. He said the deceased was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She had sent words of comfort and congratulations to the speaker, while he was on his mission, and he appreciated them. The choir then sang "Farewell all Earthly Honors." The benediction was given by Elder J.F. Gates. A large cortege following the remains to their last resting place at the cemetery, where the dedicatory prayer was offered by Elder J.F. Gates.

«b»Carter Pioneers of Provo, Utah by Arthur D. Coleman
«/b»Pg. 425 - Eliza Ann Carter was born on the 28th of September 1818 at Newry, Oxford, Maine. She was the eighth child and third daughter of John and Hannah Knight Libby Carter. At the age of 16 she saw the Mormon missionaries lay their hands on her critically ill mother and offer prayers for her recovery. She heard the sermons of the missionaries and explanations of the new Gospel. She accompanied her parents as they started their westward migration at Kirtland, Ohio about 1836. She married there early in 1838 James Chauncy Snow born 11 January 1817 at Chesterfield, New Hampshire died 30 April 1884 at Pettyville, Sanpete Co., Utah.

The young couple joined with other Latter-day Saints in the move to Adam-ondi-Ahman, the Missouri place of gathering where on the 30 of October 1838 their first child was born at Far West the same day that the Hauns Mill massacre occurred only a week after the Battle of Crooked River and a month prior to the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. and other church leaders being imprisoned in the Liberty Jail in Clay County. Eliza Ann Carter Snow, like her sister Hannah and brothers Dominicus, William F., Richard and John H., accepted the Gospel teachings of the Latter-day Saints Church in their entirety including the doctrine of plural marriage. . . The first Mormon Elders she ever heard preach was John F. Boynton and Danniel Bean. . . She consented to her husband's marriage to Lydia Elizabeth Chadwick on 20 Feb 1856 and to Jane Cecelia Roberts on 2 Dec 1856 and Ann Clark on 13 March 1857. . . She had her Patriarchial Blessing under the hand of Father Joseph Smith, the Patriarch then, in the Kirtland Temple and where the Spirit of God like a fire is burning. That was shen she was 18 years old. She was in Kirtland when the temple was dedicated and "when the stars fell from Heaven and saw them when they fell".

Eliza Ann Carter Snow lived thirteen years after her husband's death. She died 9 March 1897 at Provo City and was buried at the Provo Cemetery. Eliza Ann Carter and James Chauncy Snow were the parents of 10 kids.
