Mary was left an orphan at age 6 when her Mother died of smallpox on 12 April 1848, her Father having died on the Mormon Batallion march 18 Nov 1846. She was taken in by her Aunt  Hannah Carter York.  She married first, Aaron M. York and bore eight children by him. After the death of Aaron in 1881, She married again to George B. Higginson and remained with him until his death in 1893.

Mary served her community of Santaquin as a Midwife for years and helped deliver many hundreds of babies.
