HISTORY: (pg 28 of journal) Was a potter by trade.  Had 1 adopted son. Enlisted in Co. F, 86th Infantry at Elmira,NY on 20 Aug 1861.  His Regiment was called the Steuben Rangers.  He was taken prisoner twice; dug his way out with a spoon from Liby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.  Was discharged in 1863 because of health.  Reenlisted in 2nd DC Infantry, Co. A.  Refused promotion several times.  Mustered out at Alexandria, Virginia 12 Sep 1865.
