Kenneth Wayne Pope (9) was the third child a son of Albert Platt Pope (8) andWinifred Harriett Ritz Pope. Kenneth Wayne went to the Lind Center State Grade School and then graduated from Waupaca High School in 1917. After graduation he joined the Unite States Navy and was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station for training. As part of his training in 1917 he was sent to Harvard University where he was trained as a radio operator for four month. Kenneth received duty shortly after Christmas 1917 as a radio operator for th e destroyer, J. J. McCollough. During his duty his destroyer was torpedoed a nd sunk. He hung for his life for the next three weeks on a piece of wreckag e from the destroyer, as the life boats did not see him and left him in the w ateralone. He was rescued by a French fishing boat and taken to the coast o f France. This story of his ships sinking and his eventual rescue was docume ntedon a piece of brown bag paper (ripped from a package on the dock), as a letter to his parents. Kenneth was reassigned to another troop convoy destroye r, where he stayed until the signing of the armistice. With the war ending h e returned to the United States on the ship U. S. S. May arriving on New Ye ars Day. He was assigned to the Naval Base in New London, Connecticut, until discharge on July 21, 1919. Upon returning he worked as a electrician in Chic ago,Illinois. He the accepted a position as an Electrical Engineer in Chuqui camata, Chile, South America for eighteen months and then returned to Waupaca , Wisconsin. Kenneth Wayne (9) Pope married Grace Lindahl (born June 3, 1908, daughter of George Lindahl Waupaca, Wisconsin) on June 7, 1930. This was o ne child to this marriage. 1.) Janet Lee (10) Pope, born June 8, 1935 Waupac a,Wisconsin After his marriage he worked at the Wisconsin Veterans Home, at Waupaca. Because of his excellence in the sports of baseball and basketball, forseveral years he played baseball with various leagues in central Wiscons in.
