David PREIJERS
Was a baker per Nijmegen Court Records. The spelling Preijers seems to be a regional variation specific to Nijmegen. The way Carl signed his name on the Amsterdam marriage license, to appears to be Prijers (Pryers), with the "s" being more decorative than an actual letter. His handwriting was quite fancy (engraver like) as a silversmith so who knows. I have found modern day Preijers in Nijmegen as well as California (27). Listed as a member of the Nijmegen Mennonite Church in the record book covering the years 1766-1805. See also the baptism record for his son David where it mentions that he is a Mennonite. It is possible that he may turn up in other records, ie., Catholic, but not much hope of that. If he truly was Mennonite as the record suggests, he was the only one, so he probably was a convert or was born elsewhere.
Not sure yet, but this may be the birth record for Davids wife (below). I hit a dead end in Offenbach, but did see the film record for her sister. The facilities here do not allow for digital images so it was very difficult just to see that. I did find other Schillings in Offenbach in the Lutheran Church though and considered ordering that film. Then, I broadened my search in the LDS records and found the one below using Frankfurt as the location term. The name is not exact, but it is written every which way on the records that we have. The date is perfect, so I think this one bears some further research. Apparently the entry may not be very legible, but since we know the answer it might be a little easier to figure out. The film record states Phillipseich, which is Kr. Offenbach and is SSW of Offenbach (Main) about 15 miles. Neuhof is about 3 miles due north of Philippseich. Name: Pollexina Johanna Louisa Schilling Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: Baptism/Christening Place: Birth Date: 20 Jul 1757 Birthplace: Neuhof Death Date: Name Note: Race: Father's Name: ... Mother's Birthplace: Mother's Age: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C92488-4 System Origin: Germany-EASy Source Film Number: 1272822 After reading film 1272822, the father listed is "Secretarius" and the mother's name is written as "2ix6.84" which is cryptic to say the least. After some internet research, the "2ix6.84" was a form of Latin shorthand used in the Catholic Church and in some way represents Justina. Information on this is scarce and some is out of reach but can be found in JSTOR. As for Secretarius, I do not think that is a name but a title of either respect or position, perhaps both. Again, the reference goes to the Catholic Church. Any further comments would be pure speculation without more information. From her death record, we know the real names so finding August Friedrich in Neuhof will help. (GAS May 2011). David's christening record needs some further review. There is a notation below explaining the delay that needs translating. __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Not this David or his father, but have not found out which one yet. Baptism record shows Karel Preyer, his marriage record is signed C. Pryers, and in Amsterdam his name is spelled Preijer. His father David was born Pryers and in Nijmegen the name was and is spelled Preijers and Preyer. Apparently when the indifidual signed or wrote the entry the name is spelled Pryers and when the authorities wrote the name it is Preijer or Preijers, Note: the Dutch alphabet has no small "y". Marriage Record shows him as a silversmith from Nijmegen and 26 years old.
