Enlisted in the United States Air Service, 12 JUN 1917. He wasCommissioned a
First Lieutenant, 28 FEB 1918 and was attached to the 6th. BombingSquadron
with the Italian Army.
A distinguished bomber pilot, several times decorated veteran(including the
Croce di Guerra [Italian] 17 AUG 1918) of World War I.
He was slightly wounded in action, 17 AUG 1918.
Was President of the Montgomery County Mutual Fire Insurance Companyof Sandy
Spring, Maryland.  Served as Chief of the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire
Department. He was widely known for his interest in world harmonyand his
advocacy of the concept of Single Tax.
Known by most as Douglas within the family,
Dad to some, Grandpa Douglas to more and Uncle Doug to theauthor.
Easily one of the most highly regarded gentlemen ever to representthis part
of Maryland., ever. A well respected farmer as well. Owned Cedars, a
colonial era family building site.

                   Found among the papers from Martha CRARY NESBITT, following her death,were
various notebooks, papers and letters. Extracted from some of theseare items
noted herein, that they might not be lost to her posterity (JFN,1997).
Notes from her mother's personal notebook; Helen Thomas NESBITT, born
September 13th, 1897 at 4:00 PM. She weighed eight and a half poundsand at
three months, weighed fifteen pounds. A very lively, bright baby - assoon as
dressed, she took hold of her mother's finger and tried to suck it.She has a
fine appetite and makes her hunger evident by saying Ha-a Held herhead up
when about 5 or 6 days old. Began to smile at about 3 weeks and at 6,laughed
and cooed. Weighed 18 pounds at 5 months.
Put in short clothes at 6 months - 19 pounds at 6 1/2 months. Cutfirst two
teeth May 4th., 7 months and three weeks. Weight at 8 month, 20pounds.Crawled
on June 2, 1898. Weighed at 9 1/2 pounds, also pulled up by things.Says
Bye-Bye. Ten months old, cut first upper teeth, can almost walkalone.
Walked alone at 10 1/2 months, called nurse Blanche Ba. One yearold,
weighed 19 1/2 pounds. When a little over eleven and 1/2 months , canwalk
anywhere. 13 months, has 8 teeth - says ba-ba - pretty - bow-wow -moo, etc.
Weaned, NOV 1st, 1898.
14 months, says pussy, hot, mama,  papa,  that-is-that, how-do. 19months -
has 12 teeth. Weighs 26 1/2 pounds. Says almost any single word butonly puts
one or two together. 20 months - has 16 teeth. Some of herexpressions; Mungy
for Grandmother, Pussy for Grandfather, L'own for lie down, Sinnownfor sit
down, Hernny for Helen, Go wily for go riding, Warf for want it off,Warm for
want it on, Yink wa'a for drink of water. At 22 months, can make good
sentences.
At 29 months weighed 31 pounds in coat, has 18 teeth. 35 months,weighed 30
pounds in summer clothes. 3 1/2 years weighed 35 1/2 pounds. Wants toknow if
parsley was named for Aunt Mary Parsons. 4 years and 4 months, weighed39
pounds. Expressions & Words - Thrun - thumb, Ezxpose - suppose,Briskus -
breakfast, Tunpet - stomack, Sprittle - sprinkle. (end of notes)
Helen died of cancer at the family home, The Cedars. Her obituaryappeared
in the Washington Post, Page D6, Monday, 25 APR 1994.
Helen Nesbitt Farquhar, Sandy Spring Resident.  Helen NesbittFarquhar, 96, a
Sandy Spring resident since 1919 who had done volunteer work for theWomen's
Board of the Montgomery General Hospital and the Women's Auxiliary ofthe
Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Farquhar was born in Ashton, Maryland, attended Sherwood Schooland
graduated from Baltimore Friend's School in 1916. She attendedWellesley
College then did volunteer work during World War I.
Over the years, she had been a source of information for historiansworking on
local history and had participated in oral history projects.
She was a member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting, The NeighborsSocial
Group, and the Mutual Improvement Association, a women's organization.She
also had been active in the Association of World War I Flyers.
Temple work was undertaken a year following her passing at therequest of
her nephew, James Fash Nesbitt. It was done at the Washington, D.C.Temple.
The Endowment work was done for Aunt Helen by Sister Tracy Neiford ofthe
Springfield Second Ward, Springfield, Massachusetts Stake. SisterNieford
reported to Brother James Fash Nesbitt that she had, felt Helen'sspirit very
strongly, during the Endowment process.
In 1919, she (Helen) married Arthur Douglas Farquhar, a World War Iflying
veteran. He died in 1977.  Survivors, at the time of her death includea son,
Gordon Nesbitt Farquhar, of Weekapaug, Rhode Island; a daughter,Margaret
Farquhar Adelfio of Chevy Chase; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grand
-children. She had a nephew (son of her brother George Floyd NesbittJr.), his
name is James Fash Nesbitt, and a niece, Susannah Marie Nesbitt Kulp,and nine
grandnephews and grandnieces. Another son, Norman Farquhar,and another
daughter, Ann Nesbitt Farquhar Forbush, both who died in 1992.
