John Jr HANCOCK, REVEREND

                   Also born; 1737. Burial place; Old Granery Burial Ground. He was theFirst
Signer of the Declaration of Independence of the United States ofAmerica. He
was a signatory for the State of Massachusetts.
John is variously described as an American Patriot and Statesman. Hewas
certainly both of those. He was a man of great personal courage andsolid
character. His first signature upon the American Declaration ofIndependence
is well known. It is particularly large. He wrote it thus, in adefiant
gesture aimed toward the Crown of England.
