                   Meriwether LEWIS served in the Continental Army before he became thePrivate
Secretary to President Thomas JEFFERSON. In 1803 JEFFERSON appointedhim
Commander of an expedition to explore the New Territory known as theLouisana
Purchase. LEWIS chose the American explorer William CLARK as hisJoint
Commander. The Lewis and Clark Expedition ended in 1806 and thefollowing
year, LEWIS was made Governor of the Northern part of the LouisanaTerritory.
His death, near Hohenwald, Tennessee, remains a mystery, althoughhistorians
of today (1997) believe that he was robbed and then murdered.
