A Reformer, Clergyman (1847-1850), Essayist, and Colonel (1862-1864)of the First Negro Regiment in the Union (US) Army. Army Life in a BlackRegiment, (1870) is Higginson's vivid account of his Civil War experiences. After the war he distinguished himself as an advocate of the politicalrights of women. He became a confidante and mentor of the American poet,Emily Dickinson. After her death he edited her Poems (2 volumes,1890-91).
