John ELMER, SR
Possible Marriage date could be About 1841 instead of 1801. Notes from Sons of Utah Pioneers Book: page. 746. John Elmer was a timber man, who cut and hewed logs for building homes. He was known as the b est shinglmaker. Also a farmer and shoemaker. He always took time to study the Bible with h is family so when the missionaries came in 1836 they were ready to accept the gospel. He joi ned the saints in 1838 and left with the others. His wife and oldest son developed typhoid f ever and died in Indiana. Family went on to Adams County, Illinois where they built a cabi n for the winter. John and sons went to find work there and lived through the winter. In spr ing, John remarried and they lived in Harriet's home. In 1843, they moved to Lee County Iow a and later to Council Bluffs. They crossed the Plains in 1852 and settled in Ogden and late r moved to Payson. He remained a farmer and made shingles and shoes. John was a large man 6 ft. tall with great physical strength due to early life as a lumberman. He had a pleasant te mperament and a sense of humor. He was considered hones, and a reliable citizen, and member o f the church. He lost his eyesight a short time before his death. He died as a result of te aching some men how to properly fell a tree. He couldn't see to get out of the way. He was 9 5 years of age. (submitted by Lorna Belnap)

Notes from the Sons of Utah Pioneers book. Hyrum King was a river-runner. He would go up river, cut logs which were then bound togethe r in a raft and floated to destination. His father was a shinglemaker. Hyrum King grew up he aring and reading the Bible. So he was ready when missionaries came in 1835 and soon baptized , as was his family. He lived in Vermont for 22 years. After his conversion he went to Mass achusetts to earn money for his parents and family to join the saints. After another two year s Hyrum King went home and got his parents and left for Missouri. On the trek westward his mother and brother died in Indiana. The rest of the family graduall y made their way west. Hyrum King made shingles and ran Bishop Hunter's cattle and dairy. H e made his home near Bingham Canyon in Wight's Fort. In the spring 1857, Hyrum King moved hi s family to Payson. There he helped build community, where he was well liked and respected. H e and his wife took in five other children to raise besides their own. He lived to 93 year s old.
