See Note Page BIOGRAPHY Eric Delderfield: The name 'Plantagenet' was originally given to Count Geoffrey of Anjou, father of Henry II, because of the gay yellow broom flower ([IT:Planta genista:IT]), which he wore in his helmet. In time, this emblem was embodied in the family arms. Facts about this person: Record Change November 01, 1999 An alternate for marriage has been given as 22 May 1127 by Brian Tompsett. He was chosen by Henry I, King of England as the husband of his daughter Matilda, widow of Henry V, Emperor of Germany. This was a political move on Henry I's part to strive for peace in his continental lands. She was never queen of England for her throne was claimed by her cousin Stephen of Blois which resulted in a civil war between the two of them. Note: Known as Geoffrey Plantagenet, which was a sprig of broom; and he usually wore a sprig in his helmet, count of Anjou; son of Fulk, Count of Anjou and King of Jerusalem. In 1128 he married Matilda, daughter of King Henry I of England and widow of Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. After Henry Iâ[euro][trademark]s death (1135) Geoffrey, hitherto occupied in complex feuds with Angevin barons and rival nobles, undertook to conquer Normandy, to which he laid claim through his wife. After 1139, Matilda attempted the conquest of England from her cousin, King Stephen, who had gained the crown after Henry Iâ[euro][trademark]s death. Geoffrey did not accompany her, being still engaged in the conquest of Normandy, which he completed in 1144. In 1147 he undertook a crusade with King Louis VII of France. In 1150, Geoffrey and Matilda ceded Normandy to their son Henry (later King Henry II of England), who founded the English Angevin dynasty. Geoffrey is also known as Geoffrey the Fair. Note: Plantagenet which became a surname, was originally a nickname of the English royal House of Anjou, or the Angevin dynasty. The nickname is derived from the latin word planta or sprig and genista or broom plant, in reference to the sprig that Geoffrey always wore in his cap. Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy, 1144. The name Plantagenetderives from his wearing a twig (sprig) of yellow broom (plante genet) in hishelmet as a plume. He and Maud, in 1128, tried to lay claim to Normandy and England.Their son Henry II finally became King after invading England and forcing cousinKing Stephen to acknowledge him as heir, 1154.
