He married Amy Horner and had eight sons and threedaughters. He Matriculated from Exeter College, Oxford at the early age of 14 andreceived his B.A. September 7, 1591. He matriculated in Lincoln's Inn 1589 He was acountry gentleman and during his lifetime became a member of Parliament and was HighSheriff, Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace, serving for some 40 years. Thereis a long Epitaph in the Frampton Cotteral Church in Poundsford which states in part;John Symes was renowned for his wisdom, justice, integrity and sobriety whichinfluenced his conduct throughout his lifetime, especially in his government positions, wherehe bore all the honorable affairs incident to a Country Gentleman and as Knight of theshire. ~~~~~~~ A monument to memory of John Symes was erected in Church of BishopHull42 and gives a shorter version of his epitaph. Symes, Ex'ors John Symes, who at the close of his life left Poundisford for theresidence of his son, at Winterborne, in the Parish of Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire,where he died, and was buried. The remarkable career of this Somersetshire worthy isminutely detailed in the monumental inscription to his memory in Frampton Church. It isengraved on a brass plate surmounted with the arms of Symes: Azure, three escallopsin pale or; impaling those of Horner: Sable, three talbots passant argent, two andone. Here lyeth the body of John Symes of Poundisford, in the Parish ofPitminster in the county of Somerset, Esquire, he was born on the 4th day of March, 1572(in the 12th year of Queen Elizabeth). He lived soberly, righteously, and godly, anddied on the 21st day of October 1661. Reader, thou treadest on the sacred ashes of John Symes, Esq., who inthe late unhappy times of rebellion was forced (for his signal loyalty to hisPrince) to leave his former habitation at Poundisford, in the parish of Pitminster, in thecounty of Somerset, and to seek a repose for his old age in this parish. He was a mangreatly renowned for wisdom, justice, integrity, and sobriety, which talents he did to hidein a napkin, but religiously exercised in the whole conduct of his life, especially inthe government of that county, wherein he bore all the honourable offices incident to acountry gentleman (as Knight of the shire, elected nem. con.), for the Parliaments held atWestminster in the 21st year of King James, High Sheriff, Deputy Lieutenant for manyyears, and Justice of the Peace for 40 years and upwards, and as he was careful andsolicitous to discharge his duties to God, his soverigne and his country, so God was pleased tobestow on him several badges (also) of his special favour, as length of days,accompaned with a most healthy constitution of body for above 80 years, and of his mind tothe last, as also a numerous posterity even of children and children's children, to thenumber of 100 and upwards, descended from his loynes (by his only wife Amy, the daughterof Thomas Horner, of Cloford, in the county of Somerset, Esquire). And when he was full of days and honor, having lived 88 years 7months and 7 days, and seen the safe return of his Prince to his crown and kingdom, after a long and horrible exile, and thereby the flourishing condition of both Church and State. Having finished his work on earth, he cheerfully resigned his soul to God that gave it, the 21st day of October, anno domini 1661, in full assurance of a joyfulresurrection. Note: Three of his sons, Henry, John, and Richard backed the Duke of Monmouth in the Monmouth Rebellion. They were charged with high treason and exiled to Barbados. Another brother, George, later joined them in Antiqua, West Indies. Both Thomas and his wife Amy were buried in the Chancel of Parish Church at Winterbourne, England, a small town located between Frampton Cottrell and Bristol. Was referred to in Jahn Symes will dated 1658. Also in the will of Elizabeth Langton, Doynton Co. England. Thomas was of Barwick, Somersetshire, England. The Church where he was buried was between Frampton, Cottrell, and Bristol, England. At Winterbourne, Frampton, Cottrell, England.
