John II STRONG, ELDER
ELEC: First ruling elder of Massachusettes Immigration: 30 May 1630 Ship Mary & John,Nantasket,Ma,As Youth With His Younger Sister Having strong Puritan sympathies, he sailed from Plymouth for the newworld, March 20, 1630, in company with 140 persons, on the ship Mary and John(Capt. Squeb) and arrived at Nantasket, Mass. (Hull), about twelve miles southeast from Boston, after a passage of more than seventy days, on Sunday, May 30, 1630.The original destination of the vessel was Charles river, but an unfortunate misunderstanding which arose between the captain and the passengers resulted in their being put ashore by him at Nantasket. After searching for a few days for a good place in which to settle and make homes for themselves, they decided upon the spot, which they called Dorcester, in memory of the endeared home in Englandwhich many of them had left and especially of its revered pastor, Rev. John White, 'the great patron of New England emigration' who had especially encouraged them to come hither.(above from Dwight'sHistory) From Jedediah History Update:Elder John Strong-2nd Arrival in America(1635) on the ship Hopewell, John Driver, Master for Mass. Bay of New England. May 8, 1635-Weymouth. Jon Stronge fo rhimself, family, goods, and food.(Book #58B, entitled Index of Ships and Passengers to theAmerican Colonies) Strong family tradition, based on the account written by Gov. CalebStrong in 1777, maintains that Elder John Strong was a passenger on the ship Maryand John in 1630. James Savage in Geneal.Dictionary of the 1st Settlers ofNew Eng. 1860, discounts Elder John Strong having come on the Mary and John. Although Savage was correct in concluding John Strong did not come on the Mary and John in 1630 with his wife and children,it has not been proven that he did not come in 1630 as a youth. A number of young men of the Mary and John returned to England to marry. (Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John, Vol. 2). Elder John lived in Hingham, 1635, Taunton 1638,Winsor, CT 1646, and Northampton 1659. John Strong, Walter and John Deane were admitted freemen of the Plymouth Colony, December 4, 1638. Margerie Deane Strong and infant died about 1635 at Hingham or Taunton, MA. Emigration: 30 MAY 1630 On Mary and John Note: MARY AND JOHN - 1630 Master Thomas Squeb. Sailed from Plymouth, 20 March 1630. The day of the sailing was the Saturday before Palm Sunday. Landed Nantasket, Massachusetts, 30 May, 1630. 400 tons. 140 passengers 40 - 50 crewmen Ship owned by Roger Ludlow The ship was suppose to land at the Charles river but Capt. Squeb refused to navigate the Boston Harbor, probably because of it's islands, sandbars and shoals. He had the passengers disembark at Nantasket Point. June 1630 - John Winthrop sent for Capt. Squeb at Nantasket, where the Mary and John lay. He did not record what was said. [John] Winthrop seemed to think he had 'ended [the] difference between him [Capt. Squeb] and the passengers', in token of which Captain Squeb gave the order for a salute of five guns in the govenor's honour and it was said that Squeb later paid compensation to [Roger] Ludlow. [Dorset Pilgrims, Frank Thistlethwaite, p.76] There is no official passenger list of the Mary & John. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- HINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS: Land granted, 18 September, 1635, for five acres of land on North Street near Ship Street, Hingham, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. On August 10, 1711, he and his son Samuel Jr., took a team of horses out of Northampton to a meadow to get a load of grain. They soon were ambushed by three Indians. When the townspeople rushed there they found young Samuel dead and the father gone. Samuel Sr. had been wounded and taken prisoner. He was taken to Canada but later returned home. He arrived home on a Sabbath and entered the meeting house to the surprise and joy of the congregation.
