Birth: 932 in Scotland Death: 995 in Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, Scotland (killed by his men) 1 Event: Ruled 971-995 Note: In 973 he acknowledged Edgar, King of England as his lord in return for recognition that he held Lothian, which he had seized from the Angles. In about 994, he broke his promise and invaded England. He was defeated and lost Lothian again. He killed Culen (the prior king's brother in 977 and was himself killed in a blood feud by Culen's son, Constantine, who became the next king of Scotland. Aka, Cinaed Slain by his own men. Reigned from 971 to 994.Berchan's Prophecy indicates that his wife was a Leinster woman. Thirteen years later King Canute invaded Scotland and forced Malcolm to submit to him. However, Canute seems to have recognized Malcolm's possession of Lothian. After Malcolm II's reign, Scottish succession was based on the principle of direct descent. Previously, succession was determined by tanistry - during a king's lifetime an heir was chosen and known as tanaiste rig (second to the king).
