                   BARON OF AXEHOLME
Roger lived a fairly domestic life until 1257 when he was summoned by Henry III to the wars in Scotland and then in Wales. He was appointed by the king to dictate the terms of the English truce with Prince Llewelyn of Wales. Roger sided with thecrown in the wars with Simon de Montfort and died a year after the Battle of Evesham.
THE ISLE OF AXHOLME, LINCOLNSHIRE was once a true inland island with a few villages built on higher 'islands' rising out of the marshes. In 1626, at the request of King Charles I the Isle was drained to create rich agricultural land. The nameAxholme means The Island of Haxey.

Roger served in the wars in Scotland, Wales and Gascony in the reign of Edward I and was summoned to Parliament as a baron. He died in Ghent and his body was interred in Fountains Abbey where his effigy can be seen. Roger was quite wealthywith lands in Essex, Leicestershire (including Melton Mowbray), Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire.
Roger was substituted for Roger De Montregon (Lord of Horneby Castlewho died
1226) as a SURITY for the Observance of the MAGNA CHARTA.
